What I have seen happen though is younger people often learn things the hard way. I had to in a few instances. Once one is over 18, they are responsible for their own actions, then the school of hard knocks begins.

@CestManan in other words I agree with you. I’m somebody who reached that point at 23 years of age like you said. I’m 24 now but yes I just recently experienced a philosophical shift in my thinking at this particular age. Probably sound like a broke record here but I recently received a DUI And now I’m questioning everything about life and how I got here. But yes I’ve matured quite a bit since then. Although I must admit the more knowledge I gain of this world and the more I learn of all the gruesome sins of humans the more I grow depressed. Yet a part of me feels more free today than I did when I was foolish and innocent.

I have never had one, I seldom drink anyways. I was going to ask though - do schools or the media still demonize alcohol? I remember when I was a kid, they often rubbed it in our noses about how bad drinking is.

Weird thing is, to this day, drinking just feels wrong. Of course I smoke like a damned freight train. In the 80's though, smoking wasn't deminized yet, that didn't happen til the mid-90's when I was out of school.

@CestManan Think about it this way. Between 1920 and 1933 alcohol and was illegal to purchase or sell but it wasn’t technically illegal to consume. Legally speaking it was still okay to drink but you just couldn’t create it or purchase it. Of course law enforcement and those against drinkers didn’t care much for the technicalities of the law because hey most alcoholics are bad news. I’d be lying if I said my drinking habits are okay. Anyways the fact that we even had bootleggers proves that alcohol is just as much a drug as any other including prescription medications (they’re no more morally correct just because the doctor said it’s okay to take said pills), The schools still demonized alcohol when I was in school but I wish they’d shown me a more realistic experience of what alcoholism is. I may have never picked up the bottle if I knew what I knew now. In other words they sugar coat a lot of shit because they fear it’s too inappropriate for kids to see....maybe it is and I’m just the small percentage of kids who were bound to become alcoholics. The truth doesn’t have to be pretty for me to accept. I often find myself disagreeing with my generation on issues like these. I’m definitely not popular opinion in today’s world but I believe my issues on alcoholism are my own undoing. I made those decisions and so I’m responsible for the repercussions. I’m a Hispanic 24 year old but I don’t blame anyone but myself for my shortcomings. The media is so focused on creating this narrative that my stupid decisions were the fault of white privilege but I think that’s BS! My stupid brown ass got behind the wheel drunk. No white man put a gun to my head and told me drive. So as far as I know my shortcomings in life are a result of my own poor decisions. Nobody has ever denied me a job because of the color of my skin. But I will totally understand if they deny me a job because of my criminal history and I expect that to be the case every now and then from now on because I’d judge me harshly too if I was the employer. What I did was stupid and I shouldn’t be surprised if an employer denies me a job over my past. At the end of the day I know it’s nothing personal. Anyways back to the alcoholism. We’re hypocrites because we tell others to NEVER pick up the bottle/can yet here we are drinking away as we tell you that. Donald Trump said it himself once at one of his speeches. Believe it or not I’m a brown Chicano who supports Donald Trump.
