Does using words like 'cognitive dissonance' make you smarter ?

AbbeyRhode · F
I've never been impressed by the deliberate overuse of big words.
AbbeyRhode · F
@FairyGirlGemma The Brits do love giving things names to torment the tourists with. :)
AbbeyRhode · F
@Platinum I know it would be for me!
@AbbeyRhode That's the Welsh for you, lol they always do stuff like that!
SW-User
Too much ostentatious dissimulation?😏
SW-User
@Nimbus Following your theme & largest consensus...a person that's likely full of shit & trying to impress.🙂
Nimbus · M
@SW-User 😁
SW-User
@Nimbus I just had to break out bigger words to be a total smartass 😉
No, it usually makes you look like a pompous tosser.
Nimbus · M
@FairyGirlGemma I was thinking the same :)
nedkelly · 61-69, M
NO, but still smarter than the average Democrat, wait wait that's nothing to be proud of
Nimbus · M
@nedkelly lol, you're asking for trouble.

🍿
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
No, but understanding the meaning of those words might be some indication that you’re not an idiot.
Words have no direct effect on intelligence.

Indirectly, the more words and concepts we have, the better we can develop mental skills.

But intelligence combined with education does have an affect on the size of a person's vocabulary and how well they use it.

Someone who knows the meaning of "cognitive dissonance" will understand the stress involved when learning new things that usurp old beliefs, ideas, or values. And they will understand that the stress is a necessary and temporary phase in that kind of learning. Sometimes it's the only way to acquire a little maturity and wisdom.
Nimbus · M
@hartfire Good post :)
SweetMae · 70-79, F
Not really! I is smart without using words like those.
Nimbus · M
@SweetMae Me too! ;)
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@4meAndyou Thank you!! 🤗
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Nimbus 😉
summersong · F
Only if you actually understand what it means
Nimbus · M
@summersong Then I'll happily live in ignorance :)
Budwick · 70-79, M
Just READING the words raised my SAT score!
Nimbus · M
@Budwick lolol,
CM440 · 56-60, C
If you actually know the meaning.
Nimbus · M
@CM440 I do now 😁
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
It actually helps explain why so many people are in denial of the evil that’s being exposed
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti They say ignorance is bliss and this roves it.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Nimbus and she moped around for a long time after the election too
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Nimbus that’s basically what the term “cognitive dissonance” means...it’s a psychology term that is used often when a person can’t be reasoned with even when facts are presented
4meAndyou · F
Fifty cent words can be "problematic". I think we can "leverage a best practice" here, and "shift the paradigm". Do we need to address "core competency"? I hope we can all "buy in" on that.

I would go on, but thinking this hard is making my head hurt...🤭
Nimbus · M
@4meAndyou lolol, too much 😁
I think we could have a more accessible term..,

Ambivalent?

That lost its meaning

Ambi meaning both

Valent meaning to be strong?
Nimbus · M
@Anotherfinemessy Interesting.
revenant · F
@Anotherfinemessy hypocrisy would be better or confused mind 🙂
SW-User
Actually everyone I hear someone use that phrase I stop listening.
Nimbus · M
@SW-User lololol,
revenant · F
that term has been around for a few years, so not really
Nimbus · M
@revenant Yes, almost a cliche now :)
SW-User
Only if the audience is filled with village idiots.

MaryJanine · 61-69, F
Say what you mean and mean what you say. You will feel better for saying it and we all would appreciate it. Plain talk is better than ten-dollar words any time.
Nimbus · M
@MaryJanine I like that one :)
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@Nimbus Thanks. I thought it fit, I have a brother who likes to use the "big" words and a couple of times, he said something in German (he studied it in school). He doesn't know I am studying German, at my request, from another SW member and can not only understand what he's saying, but give him back as good as I get. He is beginning to realize that and hates it.

Starcrossed · 41-45, F
It doesn't make me smarter, but I understand the psychological theory and definition behind the term.
Benjr134 · M
No but saying I’m sorry when you realize you’re wrong does.
Nimbus · M
@Benjr134 Yes, so many people find that difficult to do.
Platinum · M
I say sorry even if I'm right.....I use simple words
Nimbus · M
@Platinum Excellent and succinct ;)
Platinum · M
Make them more simple than that....@Nimbus
shuhak · M
Nah. Usin' fancy schmancy words don't make no one smarter.
Nimbus · M
