Thinking of getting gastric sleeve surgery, my mum had it done and she had lost tunes of weight, do you think it’s, a good idea?

I have tried excersing, and I have gone smaller, but my tummy hasn’t gone away?

Ask an expert (not an sw expert because it’s not the same)
Her mom already had it done? Don’t you think she’s probably informed? @Bagalamaga

@Spoiledbrat well, this is all the time and patience i had for this discussion. You were right all along,i was totally wrong. Have a good day!
Doctors don’t know everything and they don’t know individuals. All they can do is be informative. I did not say it wasn’t good advice. I said you were dismissive and maybe underestimated her. @Bagalamaga

It is a lot more effective than the the Lap Band with embrification, but is a bigger surgery. It isn't nearly as radical as the full by pass. I suggest finding a local support group, and listen to people who have had it and hear the good and the bad. You will have to change how you eat forever. Its not something where you can just eat however you want and the surgery fixes it. Surgery always comes with a price. My ex wife had the band and lost about 40 lbs, which was what she was able to lose years before going to a dietician without surgery. She wouldn't change her diet much. She kept eating more than they told her too.

@MySecretIdentity1 My doctor friend wants me to have it done. I won't do it though. I've been a surgical nurse and don't believe in elective surgery. I have had several surgeries and they always have some drawback.

IDK, but for your safety it's best to put it off until the pandemic is over.
justanothername · 51-55, M
It won’t get rid if your tummy but you will loose weight. The hardest part of the surgery is the special diet they put you on before the operation.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Salix75 what was the hardest part for you?
Salix75 · 46-50, F
@justanothername thankfully I had a pretty easy experience with no post-op issues. But adapting to the new diet- really a new lifestyle is a lot of work.
It impacts socially (hard to find suitable food in restaurants). The number of pills/supplements required daily. Needing to be mindful what and how one eats (have to separate drinks from food). Some folks find they can no longer tolerate certain foods. Dumping syndrome is very common.
I have to be very careful with anything sweet or simple carbs (which convert to sugars), as they can cause "reactive hypoglycemia"... essentially a dangerous drop in blood sugar cause the food hits the system faster.

For some people they can't deal with cutting out all carbonated drinks, caffeine and alcohol for life.

And in the end, surgery is just a tool.. still got to put in lots of work (good nutrition, exercise)

@Salix75 agreed 👍
I know a couple of people who did it and lost weight. They lose it because can no longer tolerate large amounts of food or large meals. I ate out with a group of people one. It was a work thing and this girl that was barely touched her food. I wouldn’t have wanted to be her. I wouldn’t recommend it. You don’t look that bad. Take off 40 pounds and work out.

We lost a good friend to post-operative complications. And the surgeon was highly recommended and competent. All to say: There are risks beyond anyone's control.

Oh... I forgot to mention that she was only 40 when she died.
Salix75 · 46-50, F
Depends how much weight you need to lose. Where I am there are certain criteria potential patients have to meet to be allowed to have it.

I had a gastric bypass - one of the best thing I've ever done for myself
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
Recovery is horrible, it’s a high risk for an elective surgery, everyone I know whose gotten it had gained it back within a few years.
MOONAMONA86 · 36-40, F
My mum had it done, she’s fine@Flenflyys
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@MOONAMONA86 your mom doesn’t represent everyone who’s had it done before though. It’s a risk.
Do the bypass instead...it costs the same but is still reversible
Salix75 · 46-50, F
@Mandalorian I had the full roux- en-y. Lost 105lbs in about 9 months
@Salix75 👍 nice work
Salix75 · 46-50, F
@Mandalorian hard work, as you know yourself :) Not the "easy way out so many people think it is
justanothername · 51-55, M
The pre op diet is designed to reduce your liver size. The special shakes are disgusting and the diet is soul destroying but the end result of the surgery is worth the hardship.
justanothername · 51-55, M
My wife had it before she had our two kids. My ex wife also had one.
MOONAMONA86 · 36-40, F
Was it good?@justanothername
justanothername · 51-55, M
@MOONAMONA86 yes it is very effective but you do need to adjust your eating habits and lifestyle if you want the results to be permanent. The body does get used to the change over time so if you keep your old lifestyle you will gain back the weight over time.

You will end up with loose skin that will require another operation.

I'd never recommend such a thing!
