A woman in the USA has been billed for treatment for the Corona virus. She was uninsured and turned up at hospital and was tested. She has been billed $35,000.
@MySecretIdentity1 Ah, yes, I see what you're saying. There's also been an issue even with non insulin-dependent diabetics to test every single day to monitor glucose levels, but many insurers will only pay for enough test strips for once daily. Most doctors agree that's not often enough to manage the daily fluctuations
@bijouxbroussard I try to only text once a day, if that. My blood sugars stay pretty low, and my meds don't change based on my sugar. I'm trying to make them last because they will be going up in price and I'd also rather the people who's lives depend on it get them. I wonder off the still sell the old paper that we used to do blood sugar tests on in the old days. You'd drop one drop of blood On this paper strip and watch what shade of purple the edges were. Then you'd compare it to a key to get a 5 point range and base the insulin does on that. Ya, I'm that old.
It appears that she was "between insurers" at the time she went to the hospital and failed to pick up Cobra coverage which is insurance coverage for those whose employment has ended, and their health insurance along with it.
She suffered from lymphoma and was in treatment for her cancer already when she began to feel even more unwell in February. She visited the ER several times before they tested her for covid19.
She applied for Medicaid only AFTER she received the bill. Normally they will NOT cover services prior to her application.
So...she knew she had cancer, allowed her insurance to lapse by not picking up Cobra coverage and delayed applying for Medicaid. THEN she caught covid19 and the hospital is correct in billing her.
What none of these articles mention...anywhere...is that if you owe a hospital bill you can't afford to pay, you can contact their billing department and arrange to pay what you can afford every month. As long as you are paying even a small amount, the hospital will just bill you.
I know this because the ex had a $10,000 hospital bill and did not WANT to pay it, because he liked to go out to eat for lunch every day. So he called the hospital, pled poverty, and they told him he could pay them $10 a month.
So I have no pity for this woman. She knew she had a serious health condition and still allowed her insurance to lapse and didn't apply for Medicaid way back when she should have done...AND she can arrange to make small payments as low as $10.00 per month.
If she had bought insurance.........how many years of it would $35,000 paid for?? If people want to go gamble.....they should be prepared to pay when they lose.
@Entwistle Life is a series of choices...would I rather buy this for myself or save that money for when I need it? Would I rather have a low paying easy job than have to work hard for a better wage? Would I rather work at all if I can get a check sitting at home? You can bet your life if one says I will not pay $450 a month for insurance.....they are spending that more and more on items they WANT to spend it on. Choices. Whether it's nails and hair.....or whatever....the point is the same.
@Entwistle shows which is more important between a human life and the ability to pay health is suppose to be a caring profession in the states i am sceptical
@Entwistle The delay probably killed him, yes. He was suffering from acute respiratory symptoms when he went to the first hospital. The second hospital took him in, without insurance.
This happens in every big city...there are only certain hospitals that will take the homeless, or any patient without insurance, even for emergencies.
It would be a good idea for ALL the people in huge cities to find out which hospitals are which.
BUT...this virus is lethal, and everyone who smokes or vapes is in the high risk category.
@Entwistle @Entwistle Your suggestions seems so basic...and yet for some reason every person in America that wears a red hat acts as if what others say couldn't possibly be true...because they didn't hear it on FOX. They act as if the have no clue real, honest news and facts exists...or that they can be found if they just Googled it. This is 2020..........why ask for someone else to take the time to type out what they themselves can read in 2 seconds or less?
Yes, this was for the full treatment, not the testing. Testing, in the US, is free. Congress passed legislation to make it free, but you may still be billed for everything, if you have no insurance.
@Tastyfrzz Yeah, if she doesn’t have it, she doesn’t have it. Unfortunately it doesn’t mean they won’t garnish every future penny she earns trying to recoup it. 😒
I wish I could say this surprised me. And I understand that before all of this Trump was talking to Boris Johnson about letting our pharmaceutical robber barons get a foothold in the U.K. This is an example of why you should resist that—your system works. Ours clearly does not. It’s strictly “your money or your life” here. 😞
