I went shopping today & I saw a Chinese man wearing a medical mask in Walmart, should I be scared?

From what I have heard, it is common in Asian societies for people to wear masks when they are sick. It is a courtesy to others.
@chrisCA In other words, run.

@chrisCA I'd noticed lots of Asian people in masks before the outbreak. Good to know.

No . He is , but I think things will settle down

Wherever it came from, it’s here now. Italy has half the country on lockdown. England has closed 14 schools, with more closings expected because people returning from Italy are infected.

Do those pills prevent the flu? I don’t think so, if they did, no one would catch the flu, and the Corona virus is more virulent according to the CDC. @cherokeepatti

@Carissimi They assist the immune system. Having proper levels of zinc is essential. I used to take spirulina and it was making my immune system strong but since I have an autoimmune problem (rheumatoid arthritis) I stopped taking it, have had problems for a few year with my joints.

Those masks do NOTHING toward protecting you from getting sick. They do protect you from making others sick.

I’ve seen Asians wearing surgical masks for weeks. I wore one myself on different occasions. One as I was recovering from flu and bronchitis, and another time because I didn’t want to catch it again. I’d wear an N95 mask, but they are all sold out. Now there is “patient 1” in California who is the first to catch it from their community, you know more are walking around infecting others. This is the start. Take all precautions.
No. That’s very common where I live. More so in Asian communities.

Nah...lots of asians around here are wearing masks!

It could be to protect others as he isn't sure what he has. The CDC doesn't care about it's citizens as in the case of the man from California. The patient was sent home last week after he went to the hospital. And the CDC refused requests to check him for coronavirus despite requests from local health officials.

I see a lot of Asians wearing masks, even before the Coronavirus. I was in Japan 4 years ago & almost all the locals wore masks. A mask will not protect you from the Virus.
MasterDvdC · 61-69, M
@BobbieT A mask will not protect YOU from any airborne illness. It only protects others from YOU
BobbieT · M
Yes, like I said @MasterDvdC

@BobbieT Just reinforcing the message with some facts.
No. It's a common practice in Asian communities. I live near Seattle and have seen this frequently over the past several years.

As an added bonus...putting on a medical mask is a handy way to shorten long lines 😁

He was probably waiting to raid the shop amidst panic. I'm waiting for that 😂

It's coming. Shop now while you can still leave your residence.

A lot of Asians wear those most of the time in public. I can't really say I blame them
purplepen · 51-55, F
No. You should be glad he's taking precautions.
