Originally, they projected 2.2 million deaths for the US. Then, 1.1 million. Currently we are at about 110,000. It looks like their original projections were overly aggressive.

Yes, it seems likely. Media tends to blow the little things out of proportion, while largely ignoring the most dangerous. Case in point: Fukushima.
