What was the theme or atmosphere of the best and worst bars you've ever personally witnessed?

When I turned 21, my dad took me to San Francisco, (I had won a couple hundred bucks on our way to SF. Dad told me "You're of legal age so go check out some of the worlds finest bars." First one was called "The extension" each bar seating had a phone and cocktail napkin with all the extension phone numbers listed, after a few moments my phone rang I answered, a woman asked me, "Hey handsome let me buy you a drink?"

My face was flushed but said "Ok" Eventually she came and sat beside me and we had a blast talking and she suggested a few other places that were fun, my first gay bar called Finochio's one of the first drag bars, there I got really buzzed with drag queen's buying me drinks. It was the best birthday of my life. Thanks dad!

When I was a teen we would go to NY to party. There was a club there with phones on the table so you could call other tables. Kind of cool.
The worst places had music that would bust your ear drums.

The best bars don't have stupid "themes" or "brands". Those are hallmarks of shitty bars.

A good bar is dark, has minimal stained glass lighting, no see through windows, one very small or no tv, large high back booths,a jukebox, and has lots of exposed wood. It doesn't have signature drinks but it does have free pretzels and peanuts.
