Should there be a law against teaching children how to use a gun?

TexChik · F
Nope , that’s ridiculous . Gun safety should be taught 1st thru 12th
@TexChik Yeah.... I miss the days when insanity was the rare exception to the rule rather than the status quo.
TexChik · F
@puck61 Me too. Common sense and decency were the rule rather than the exception. The sheriff never worried about pulling be over because I was pulling to big a load...He just made me unhitch and go get a bigger vehicle to tow it.
@TexChik Game wardens came to our school and gave us gun safety courses every year before dear season. Kids had mommies and daddies and they went to church and learned decency and respect. Leftists began attacking that 'way of life' and now the left is trying to completely destroy what is left of that.
No. Around here it's a rite of passage. With normal people, it's normal. Around 10 years of age a kid should learn gun safety and marksmanship. In normal households the 'safety' part should come even earlier, but a normal child in a normal healthy household should have a decent rifle at 12 years of age.
[c=#BF0000]There is no gun problem. There is a behavioral problem because of the damage the left has done to children's minds. [/c]
@NativeOregonian Knock yourself out. Good luck with that!

@puck61 🤪
@NativeOregonian Damn! You have to be from Eugene!
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Hardly. Should be expected to teach how and respect

I would say that children should be taught how to defend themselves, but not with a gun.
TexChik · F
@SW-User So a 12 year old is home alone, 2 men break into her home and she is horrified. She saw they had knives . She called 911 and hid in her parents closet. Luckily she recovered her father's pistol which he had trained her to use. When they burst into the closet she fired killing one and wounding the other who was later caught. Had she not had the gun, she likely would have been raped , murdered, or both. Happen in Houston, TX. Teaching a child about guns and how to safely use one in the appropriate circumstance is invaluable training. In this case it saved her life. If more kids knew about guns, and understood them and how to safely handle them, accidental shootings would disappear to a great extent.
SW-User
@TexChik Well in that kind of situation of course, you have to defend yourself with any means necessary. I'm talking about situations such as punks and bullying.
TexChik · F
@SW-User any responsible adult would never teach a child that
Steve42 · 56-60, M
No. Not if they also taught them safety. I started hunting at 12, was required to get a license and that required a safety class. I have yet to shoot anyone on purpose or by accident.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Steve42 I grew up in a remote area and by the time I was 5, I had my own shotgun and hunting rifle. At 53, I have never used a gun to commit a crime, never used a gun to shoot anyone. At 5 years old, I would get a handful of shells from my Dad and go hunting rabbit, squirrel, or deer. I have a healthy respect for firearms and I learned to use them effectively and safely. I taught my own children at about the same age, they are all grown and out on their own having never used a firearm in an improper manner. What you can almost count on is that at some point one of your kids friends will show up somewhere with a gun, probably a friend that hasn't been taught to safely use it, instead of recognizing that they are in danger, they may be curious and wind up getting hurt. I wanted my kids to know what was safe and unsafe and when others were unsafe, they would come get me or get away from the danger. At the very least every child should see a demonstration of how dangerous they are.
Steve42 · 56-60, M
@Roadsterrider Well yeah, that was my point.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Steve42 I am in agreement with you.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
Back before the Gun Control Act of 1934 and 1938, anyone with cash could order a fully automatic surplus machine gun COD through the mail. Actual military surplus Thompsons with a rate of fire double that of an M-16, 1200-1300 rounds a minute, with no age limit, no background checks, no waiting period, nothing. Yet there were no school or theater shootings in the 1920s or 1930s. After GCA 34,38,68 and 1994s "assault weapon ban" counting state laws we have enacted over 20,000 gun laws as a nation to solve the problem. It is more prevalent now that when there were almost no laws concerning guns. Is another set of laws restricting guns going to make a difference. When you look at most of the people involved in shootings, they acquired the firearm illegally, they carried it illegally, they discharged it inside restricted areas illegally. They shot other people, illegal. Do you think that one more felony charge that can be added to the list will stop the guy from trying to kill people? Guns are harder to get now than ever before yet the problem persists. It isn't a gun problem, it is a decay in the value of life and the morals of our society that has caused the problem.
@Roadsterrider
It isn't a gun problem, it is a decay in the value of life and the morals of our society that has caused the problem.
Exactly, and it blows my mind that these people can't see this. They can't see how American society has decayed with the decrease of corporal punishment, traditional families, and traditional values. It couldn't be more obvious.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Roadsterrider The reasons for the gun control acts of 1934 and 1938 to get rid of those Thompsons and BARs out of the hands of non military and law enforcement was because so many innocent civilians were getting killed during mob war crossfires.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@NativeOregonian But they weren't killing civilians, law enforcement didn't have the firepower to compete with them, the gangsters weren't going to the local mall and opening up. If you search for mass shootings during the early 1900s, you will find items like the St Valentines Day Massacre but you won't find Capone or Baby Face Nelson going to the local theater and shooting 50 people. And as far as getting automatic weapons out of the hands of criminals, that hasn't worked either. The gangbangers of today have better full auto weapons than the police of today. If a person is set on killing someone they don't care if there is one more law in place or not. Maybe it will work like making heroin illegal, glad you can't find it on every corner in America.

Lousasfincter · 51-55, M
No but their should be a law that makes these slob teachers stick to the actual education syllabus instead of injecting their filthy self deleterious opinions and behaviors into the everyday lives of my children.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
Well, let's look at it this way. Parent teaches child how to use a gun. Kid goes to school and blows out a their bully's brains. Who do you think is going to be held the most responsible and get in the most trouble? Even worse, what if that kid accidentally shoots a family member? In addition to the consequences, how do you think that child will be affected, along with the rest of the family? I can't believe that no one has brought this up.
@SubstantialKick Kids are kids, don't have the wisdom and maturity of an adult, and are very "curious".
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
The kid that would do that is probably the one that had no teaching about guns. They’ll think it’s a toy or a way to get rid of your problems. With the correct teaching they will understand that is a last resort for defending yourself or family. Same as martial arts, where with enough experience you could easily kill someone, but are taught to only use it in severe situations. Not to mention it is a hobby, like archery, baseball, bowling, etc. @SubstantialKick
BananaBrown · 41-45, F
No. That’s like saying instead of teaching kids about safe sex, we tell them nothing and hope for the best.

I was about 10 or younger when I first used a gun. I shot a can off the fence in the woods whilst on holiday with my dad. I was never that interested in it after that. I actually only did it twice then I never really cared about guns. I now hate guns. I shot the gun cabinet last year as I was bored on holiday at a farm , same place. I say yes and no , some kids are mature and know what you can do and shouldn’t do with guns , whilst some don’t understand or are mentally ill and use them for the wrong reasons. I say it all depends on the person. I was curious and I found out what it was like to use one then that curiosity died out even when my dad cleaned them in front of me and I watched him load them , I guess I got used to being around them all my life I never really bothered about using them as it wasn’t no longer a new thing. I think giving them an opportunity just to try it with being surprised at all times is ok but it’s teaching them right from wrong and how to be mature and safe around them including others safety.
hertoy · 70-79, M
On the contrary all children should learn gun safety & handling.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
There should be a law to ban guns to the public who are illiterate.
@MasterLee Wow, really? MasterLee, I'm so proud of you! 🤣
chrisCA · M
@latinbutterfly For some, it is always about politics. 😏
@chrisCA Some are clearly obsessed.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I saw something the other day where they quoted one person per day is killed by a child or toddler playing with a gun ... Go figure!
Terrasworld · 26-30, F
@ozgirl512 Exactly! Children have no business having access to firearms.
that’s bad parenting...
Same result if you leave razor blades laying around..
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout incredibly bad parenting
jim44444 · 70-79, M
If there are guns in the house then the kids should be taught gun safety and use as should the adults be taught. In the USA any moron can buy a gun and think they are experts because they watched a John Wayne movie. They leave loaded weapons on the coffee table. When a child picks it up and shoots someone everyone clamors for more laws. It would be better to hold the dumbass adults accountable.

I have guns and they are locked away. My grandchildren have seen them and have been instructed that if they see a gun then they are to tell my wife or I immediately and not to touch it.
Next year I will take the 2 oldest to the range so they can learn basic shooting.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
To teach them gun safety, no, to teach them ammosexual barrel licking propaganda rhetoric, yes.

@JAYS21 heck.. give them the drugs when theyre 7.. (recently in the news)

its a world gone mad.
Terrasworld · 26-30, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Are you referring to the case where the dad was fighting the mom to stop her from giving his 7 year old son female hormone injections?
SW-User
That sounds like something that would be extremely difficult to impossible to regulate and enforce. It better to enforce laws that keep guns locked up and away from children so they don't hurt themselves. Kids also should learn that guns are not toys and to treat every firearm as if it's loaded

I grew up in a pretty tough neighborhood. Did my parents teach my siblings and I how to use a gun like the violent, animalistic gang members? No, they taught us how to fight.
MrAboo · 36-40, M
No, many of our soldiers grew up with guns. That would be a bad idea.

No there should not.
MrMonnyPenny · 22-25, M
Nope. Law should be limited to preventing theft, murder and slavery and that’s it.
SW-User
No but they should learn how to defend themselves around the appropriate age
StraCat · 41-45, M
Yes. I would focus more on teaching them self defense or a martial art.
Sicarium · 46-50, M
No. Let's not make all the things illegal.
@Sicarium if we can’t tax it to death, we’re going to ban it..
SisterChristian · 41-45, F
Yes, of course there should. Isn't there already?
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Absolutely not!!!
