I’m not sure I see the point of the comparison. If anything, a Vietnam-Syria comparison would more likely justify Trump’s erratic whiplash withdrawal from Syria. The withdrawal from Vietnam was negotiated over the course of many months by experienced diplomats and still ended with the total collapse of our allies in the conflict. If the theory of the comparison is that the end result was inevitable, Trump’s clumsily ham-fisted approach couldn’t have done any more damage than if he’d actually deferred to diplomats and defense experts to actually negotiate a well-planned withdrawal.
