If your AC crapped out, what's the best way to stay cool in the house?

Especially at night when it's time to sleep.

My grandmother used to put a bowl of ice right in front of her fan, and she would sleep with the fan blowing on her OVER the bowl of ice.

A fan and freeze some wet hand-towels and wipe yourself down. Ice water next to the bed.

Mine has a month or so back but they fixed it before dark.
But if they hadn't of? I would have slept outside on the recliner on the back porch.

@SW-User Not a bad idea but we're expecting thunderstorms all night tonight. Plus the humidity is out of this world! Ugh. I might try the recliner downstairs where it's cooler. Thanks! :)

Dampen a thin sheet and drape it over your naked self and direct the fan towards you.

Open all windows in the early morning when it's cool. Shut them and the blinds before it warms up outside. Fans and cold water or ice throughout the day. Limit cooking and electronics use, anything that produces heat. And sleep naked.

@lovelywarpedlemon This might be the best answer so far....I told the kids to keep the blinds closed today and all the lights off. Asking them to keep the electronics off will be like cutting off their arms! LOL

bring out the fans. place a box fan in the window. if you have a Styrofoam box put ice in it and put it behind a fan. keep the shades down. turn off the lights any anything else exerting heat. stop talking and moving around.

Fans. Lots of fans. I don't have AC, and while the temperature here near the ocean usually pleasant, it does get rather warm at times...90s or even 100s...but the 6 Honeywell fans I have move the air around nicely

Now in my 60's I never had AC and have no care for it. I am "cool" in my house in the fall, winter and early spring. I want to bake when i can.

@Elandra77 I usually enjoy a bit warmer temps when sleeping...but the humidity is pretty bad. Of course we're having the hottest days of the month this week!

The humidity is the worst!

@Stereoguy those are a lot more expensive than the little window units. I saw one priced for almost $300, maybe they have some that cost less than that.
