KINGSTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania school district is warning that children could end up in foster care if their parents do not pay overdue school lunch bills.

The letters sent recently to about 1,000 parents in Wyoming Valley West School District have led to complaints from parents and a stern rebuke from Luzerne County child welfare authorities.

The district says that it is trying to collect more than $20,000, and that other methods to get parents to pay have not been successful. Four parents owe at least $450 apiece.
This is outrageous. The one place on earth where there SHOULD be a free lunch is in schools, for those who cannot pay.

The question I would pose is - are those parents in arrears getting manicures and tattoos while their kids are begging for lunch?

@Mamapolo2016 Many of them can barely put food on their own tables.
@NativeOregonian That’s why I specified ‘those who cannot pay.’

@Mamapolo2016 Your second part actually contradicts the first.

Not a fair comparison, China has no lunch program just to start.

There actually is a lot more to the story. See Fox news.

Yet I believe the situation is going into litigation. Feds have said that district has more than enough money to feed every student in all schools.

@NativeOregonian Federal funding pays for everything. Heck the population of all of Wyoming can fit in a moderate sized town of 600000.

@GeorgiaHoodlum No I don't agree. How can you possibly compare when one has it and the other doesn't.

And you obviously know it because of the question in your reply.

Which the answer is. If they have a formal schooling, and in some outlining places like Tibet (apart of China) they don't. They bring their own food. Just like when I was a kid.

Any time parents neglect the welfare of their children there's a risk that they will lose their ability to further neglect their children ... i.e. their children may have to be taken into foster care while child welfare agencies investigate.

The implication that schools have a responsibility to care for neglected children while ignoring parents' neglect of those children is silly. The schools did their part. It's the parents behavior that needs to be evaluated.

The best interest of the children rules the day.

America is unbelievably free compared to China. Especially in light of the "social credit" system.
There are corrupt people sometimes in any free society.

That is akin to debtor's prison, which is illegal in the United States. We pay property taxes to fund schools and those taxes should include free lunches as well. It costs an average of $9,000 for every child to be publically educated every year yet they still have to buy or bring their own lunches. It costs an average of $60,000 a year to incarcerate one prisoner convicted of a crime, yet they get their meals provided. Isn't it time for those monetary figures to switch?

Go and live in China and try and publish a free press article and you'll soon find out how free it is
@NativeOregonian No, it actually doesn’t. Tattoos and manicures, etc, are not necessities.

Food for your child’s lunch IS a necessity. My point was that if a parent is so occupied with their own wants that they ignore their child’s needs then maybe foster care should be considered.

However, if a parent can demonstrate that they are doing their part to provide for their children, then the taxpayers should step in to make sure that child is properly nourished and prepared to learn and thrive. And regardless of the reasons, our children should never be deprived of necessities. But the parents who can provide and don’t should be penalized.
@NativeOregonian My point.

@GeorgiaHoodlum I agree with you both.

I'd like the full details of this story, because it seems like this wouldn't be the first time it happened.

Also, if you think China has more freedoms you need to lay off the bong.
