Why do Americans say "alternate" instead of "alternative"?

Always find that in American, words are butchered to suit their own. Like color and colour

Why do some people pronounce it gif and some people pronounce it gif? Because it's just the way the world works, man.

They have some different ways of spelling things. But i like how they spell Jail. We spell it gaol, it sounds like a dyslexic football player. I prefer jail 😌

Those are two different words for two different situations... If it is an American thing it makes no sense.
