Would you be offended if your in-laws laughed about your dressing sense or your looks?

4meAndyou · F
Yes, extremely offended. In fact, my former mother-in-law insisted I could NOT buy a wedding gift for the ex's cousin, (she wanted to buy one gift and share the cost with all of us), and she said to me, "Well, not everyone has YOUR taste." (I have modern taste, and she likes stuff that looks like the 1940's).

When I think about it, I still think, "My gosh, what a horrible bitch."

I still wish I had told her that she was horribly rude, nasty, and controlling before I divorced her son.

@TheIncredibleHulka You don't even know. She and her sister got drunk and started ranking out my seven year old son to his face because his name was too country for them. There was so much...but usually she said things when it was just me and her.

@4meAndyou good thing you got away. I thought mean people like her only existed as villains in fairy tales.
4meAndyou · F
@TheIncredibleHulka No, she was really like that, and I would tell the ex about it and he told me that I was mean. The whole family was a mess, and I am just sorry I ever got hooked up with them.

My mother in law wore moo moo’s. What the heck did she know about fashion?

I would kill them and bury the bodies in the woods 😒
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Nah. I wear the same kinds of unfashionable clothes that I've worn for decades.

But it did piss me off when my mother in law would criticize her own daughter's looks.
Pfuzylogic · M
I would build some serious personal boundaries about how I allowed them to affect me emotionally.
They sound pretty cruel.
GallantlyChurlish · 46-50, M
No. My mother-in-law likes to call me gaunt when I’m running a lot and get lean. But, to heavier people, I guess gaunt is relative.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
Married the wrong person 🤷‍♂️
TheIncredibleHulka · 31-35, F
@Rokasu they're not married yet but he's a good guy. 🤨
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@TheIncredibleHulka I’ve dealt with shitty parents before. Never again.

Are you in situation? Not cool, not cool at all.
TheIncredibleHulka · 31-35, F
@eMortal erm no... I'm not married yet. I'm asking for a cousin who is not liked by her would-be in-laws and they make no secret about laughing at her, when there are tonnes of reasons why you could laugh at them, but she doesn't point them back. She's on the verge of a mental breakdown and I'm glad her fiance has got her back.
I was in a similar situation with my ex, and I used to make light of it by laughing at myself, but he's my ex so I wouldn't be bothered now.
eMortal · M
@TheIncredibleHulka her fiance should make it stop. I mean seriously. He should talk to his family.
