I'm moving into my first apartment on August 21st

Any tips or advice before I start paying rent?

Yay! Document ALL damages, marks and imperfections with the apartment with pictures when you take possession of the apartment and bring it immediately to your landlord's attention that it was like this and you didn't do it. Someday when you move out the landlords will look for almost any reason to withhold your security deposit. If it has to go to court you want pictures and documented proof "judge it was like this when I moved in and I didn't do it" if you want him to rule in your favor to get your money back.

All maintenance issues should be brought to your landlord's attention however they specify in writing by letter, email or phone call as soon as you notice it being needed. Don't wait too long to report stuff again, you're responsible for letting them know of problems, if you sit on it you could be to blame.

Always pay your rent in full, on time or you can be tossed out on your ass with little notice and the landlord isn't responsible for your stuff in many states, so they can just put it on the curb, that sucks.

Get some food-grade diachotameous earth powder and a puffer bulb and a face mask and treat your apartment by lightly poofing the powder in every closet, shelf, cabinet, under sinks, etc. before you move in. If there are roaches are bedbugs they’ll die fairly quickly. Diachotameous earth has fine particles that cut insects & cause them to dehydrate yet is not toxic to humans. Just don’t inhale the dust into your lungs. And make sure it is the FOOD-GRADE TYPE.

Make sure you read and understand. I had an apartment saying that cable, electricity, and water were included.

It was included alright. I had to pay separate bills along with my rent.

So, make sure if everything before signing. Then you're stuck

@Dianna that’s up to the landlord, they have to have a master key to let maintenance in for repairs and checks.

@Dianna apartment complexes usually have master keys and they will rotate the locks after someone moves out, remove the core and have new keys for the apartments.

Beware friends wanting to make it a party hangout, or worse- their place to crash whenever they're homeless.

keep your doors locked, no matter which side of them you're standing.

I'm pretty sure this rule is all around: The landlord MUST give you at least 24 hours notice before they come into your place. But check it out. GOOD LUCK, hope it's going well! 🤩

Take pictures of the place before you move in. I had a landlord claim we switched the 'new' oven with an old one.
Congratulations! Don't try to live beyond your means.
