Can you think of a religion that has a female founder or chief deity?

Isis (Egyptian) is all I can think of.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
Isis?

It was my belief that Amun-Ra was the chief deity of the Egyptian pantheon
ImKelsey · 26-30, F
@Quizzical Thanks. I'll research it.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@ImKelsey I might be wrong of course, lol

I do think that over time Isis absorbed a lot of other minor Goddesses and took over their duties, making her one of the more powerful gods
Shiva in Hinduism?
Lonelymanik · 31-35, M
@ImKelsey No shiva brahma and vishnu those 3 are in trinity.. we have "parvathy" wife of shiva goddess who's the chief deity called mother of all
ImKelsey · 26-30, F
@Lonelymanik Oh yes. I forgot. The fountainhead?
Lonelymanik · 31-35, M
@ImKelsey No goddess with the lion
Tiamat is the Primordial Dragon Goddess who is the mother of her own Demon-Gods and she slain her male counterpart Abzu to gain full power. She is the embodiment of chaos.
This is also the belief system I personally follow. @ImKelsey

@MorbidCynic Wicca perhaps? No need to divulge.
I was simply implying that I have in depth knowledge by telling you that. I think Wicca is useless, so no. @ImKelsey

Lilith!
She is said to have been the first woman in the world and was created by God at the same time as he created Adam. It is said that Lilith was then banished and rejected by God after it was found that she was stronger and more intelligent that Adam and she would not obey the commands of Adam.

In a wide collection of related mythologies, from Greek to Scandinavian, there were some "women", witches (Moirai, Nornas), typically three, that "made" the fate of both, humans and Gods.

Ancient Babylon, what we today call the Sumerians, were the originators of all Pagan faiths. All Pagan Gods and Goddesses can be traced back to the founders of Babel, Nimrod and Semiramis.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I think most pagan beliefs have the basic earth mother concept at their centres... Also I believe the female saint of Ireland was coopted into Christianity

If belief systems/philosophy are incorporated in your umbrella then I would include Ayn Rand and Objectivism.
It is a form of self worship.
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
Christianity?
I mean how to imagine the Prince of peace without Queen of peace?
BiblicalWarrior · 51-55, M
@YMITheWayIM No, the founder of Christianity, or rather, The Way, as it was originally called, was definitely male.
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
The prehistoric Earth Goddess cults?
ImKelsey · 26-30, F
@canusernamebemyusername Possibly. I've seen the idols. All female, and pregnant it seems.
@ImKelsey Fertility was really important then. So those idols tend to have exaggerated sex organs. Although some have claimed they are actually Neolithic porn. I could definitely see that. Lol
@ImKelsey Wicca might be an option but it was founded by Gerald Gardner in 1954 I believe. Although it has pagan roots so it really depends on when you think it was founded.

In Sumerian mythology the twin godess of Life and Death were out of the hyerarchies and over the Gods.

Egyptian & Phoenician, are contemporary pagan religions, they each have a lot of Gods, with no central authority. Some of these gods are female. Greek mythology, splintered off from the Phoenician, and they have some female gods, but no central authority, same with Roman.

In modern times? possibly hinduism. Judeo-Christian is all male.
DIMaverick4 · 41-45, M
Hinduism .. there is even a female trinity like male trinity..
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Mary Baker Eddy founded the Christian Scientists.

ImKelsey · 26-30, F

CharlieZ · 70-79, M
And seems that till the end of the neolithic transition, main deidities were godess. Forces of Nature, Earth, the Moon.
Massive agriculture, cattle breed, firt cities and the social related social changes shifted the "power" to male gods.
ImKelsey · 26-30, F
@Experienced33 Sounds English. I'll research it.
