Why are politicians going on about LGBT+ people?

I've seen quite a lot on line and in papers about politicians, mostly on the right wing, either wanting to pray the gay away or hoping science can "cure" us. When there is so much inequality, poverty and threats to the planet?

Tends to mix itself with religion and they think that gay is a sin that they must nose into another person's life to "save" them or God will punish them too for not "saving" them.
