how do people get so into gambling?

how do people get so into gambling? I find slots and poker boring. its up to chance and most of the time your just sitting and waiting. even people who win the lottery dont always have a better life after winning. my dad is so into the lottery and he wants me to pick the numbers. I really hesitate because I dont want to loose his money if I dont pick the right numbers. he has got a lot of new interests he never used to be into and none of them are that good. I dont want him to drink and gamble too much.

Poker can involve skills. That's where card counting comes in, basically mathematics is used.

I was reading a Nassim Taleb book, believe it was Randomness, where he talked about a mathematician, perhaps a professor, who kept playing a gambling game, not poker, something else that didn't involve math to help you and he just kept losing. Even "smart" people get caugt up in it.
