Anyone who is genuinely interested may find a valuable assertion in the writings of Isreali, Joseph Naveh' 'Origins of the Alphabet' or may wish to study this thesis of Joaquim Azevedo entitled 'The Origin and Transmission of the Alphabet'. It is extremely well-written.

Joseph Naveh's 'History of the Alphabet' - full text - can be found here.

I have printed editions of Naveh's works here at home but have not been able to find - yet - suitable pdf downloads for readers.
