Either James McAvoy or Jake Gyllenhal.
I remember watching Nightcrawler wondering where in the fuck Jake Gyllenhal was that whole movie 'cause I didn't see him. I saw a dude who looked vaguely like him who creeped the fuck out of me for 2 hours, but no Gyllenhal. He's that good.
I watched Split still unsure of whether to believe to Shyamalan again. Then McAvoy came in playing fucking 24 different people in one man's body and he's so fucking good that as soon as he came on screen and started speaking I could tell which persona he was. Fucking masterful.
Both deserved oscars.

I'm also actually gonna give Johnny Depp some mad cred because while I love Captain Jack Sparrow, I watched Black Mass in theatres and was once again wondering where the fuck the lead actor was because I didn't see Johnny Depp in that movie, just a fucking terrifying dude.
I'll give Christian Bale some cred because when I saw him in American Hustle I thought he cloned himself and then ate his clone. Compare him in that movie to him in The Dark Knight Trilogy and The Machinist. Three completely different people.

Leonardo Dicaprio ad-libs a lot of dialogue in his movies (the entire dinner scene in Django: Unchained) and is one of the few actors I've watched absolutely nail every accent he does (Ugandan in Blood Diamond, British in The Aviator and German in that movie about the waterfall).

Finally Sharlto Copley started out as little bitchy Wikus Van Der Merwe in D9. A little while later I went to see Elysium in theatres wondering where the fuck he was before I realized he was that big fucking monster of a man on screen.

However, Ben Affleck's portrayal of a High-Functioning Autistic-afflicted/Sociopathic ASPD-diagnosed man in The Accountant was so damn accurate and true to real life (which I consider impressive since I am one myself) that I might have to give that title to him just because of it. Ryan Gosling plays one fucking hell of a much more ruthless, violent and terrifying and also fairly realistic sociopath in Drive but I just think The Accountant handled the specifics and surgical aspects of it a bit better, Drive you have to dissect to get there and you also don't see how he got there.

1: Ben Affleck
2: Jake Gyllenhal
3: James McAvoy
4: Leonardo Dicaprio
5: Johnny Depp
6: Christian Bale

I can keep going:

7: Robert Downey Jr. (watch Tropic Thunder and A Scanner Darkly)
8: Chietwiel Ejiofor (I might be butchering his name)
9: Lupita N'yongo
10: Ryan Gosling

Tom Cruise I don't find has a lot of versatility. But I'm gonna give him his own ranking just for balls and possibly actual literal insanity considering his last film.

@SW-User Fuck YES!!!. Mads all the way.
I just wish Hollywood would give him more hero roles. Fuck The Hunt was heartbreakingly awesome. Although he does play a good villain.
Plus I have a feeling he doesn't like using his eyes.
