I Just Fixed My Heating System...

A few nights ago the blower of the inside unit of my heat pump system started to vibrate badly. I shut it down, and then checked to see why the blower was having a problem, but it spun fine when I checked it. Started it up again, and the same thing happened. After a few minutes it let out a horrible screech. I shut it down again, and checked it again. This time one of the 3 big screws that mount the blower motor to the housing had pulled loose from the vibration. I tried re-screwing it in, but it just pulled loose again. I shut it down and left it. Fortunately it has been pretty mild weather here, so my two small electric space heaters were plenty to keep my house comfortable.

Today was warm and beautiful, so I decided to tackle it. I pulled the whole blower assembly, housing and all. I found the cause of the problem, a mouse was in the housing. Why it didn't drag on the squirrel cage fan when I checked it, I don't know, but, that was the problem. I then pulled out the 3 mounting screws, shifted the assembly a few degrees, drilled 1/16" pilot holes, put the screws back in, and remounted the blower unit. Works fine now, no vibrations. It actually sounds better than it has since I moved here, quieter.

Gives me a nice sense of accomplishment, and saved me the cost of having a heating tech come and fix it.
nice!! I think i need to call a heating tech to look at mine. sometimes it makes a weird sound at teh end of its run - I almost expect to see a puff of smoke with the "Ooooffff" like sound it makes.
