If you were gonna get married, how long do you think you should date before you know someone well enough to get engaged?

I say 2 years.

Depends on experience.
First time. A few years.

After years of married life the time can be shortened.

Little time is enough if you're both truly aware and have decades of domestic life.

I knew someone that knew someone a week and got married and lasted 25 yrs until the guy died.

A week. huh. i know a similar story and they are also married and have been a long time. it’s reallllly risky though. @SteelHands

@DoubleRings It is risky these days. But back then he was 60 something and she was 57. Those were maybe better people from those times.?? Also there was the fact she and his son were acquainted from where she worked for many years. Although he wasn't very close with his dad.

I know much more about all their stories than I imagine any of the 3 know by themselves. It's a crazy world alright. Lol

Depends on your age and place in life. I think engagements are so variable in length that it's more about when you actually get married. I do think you should always live together first for a substantial amount of time.

There is no specific time. You will know when the time is right.
geekturk · 41-45, M
Minimum 1 I think. Cuz life has many ups and downs. I need to see how she reacts in ups and downs
geekturk · 41-45, M
@Spoiledbrat nolt sure if i got wiser but lets hope i did :)
We’re the same age. We just married at different ages and it does matter. No two circumstances are the same for everyone so it might not matter to you but it might to someone else AND with someone else. @DoubleRings
You should know yourself a little bit better. 🙄 @geekturk

I once read a study that concluded that, for most people, and for a long term happy marriage, the time frame for courting before marriage is 6 months to a year and a half.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
before marriage or engagement? @greenmountaingal
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@DoubleRings Before marriage.

I agree with you but I would say you will never be able to figure someone out completely within 2 years too because some people are actually good at hiding it and are very deceptive.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
you’re right that’s always possible. @Beatbox34
exexec · 61-69, C
It was almost 7 years for us, which is waaaaaay too long.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
my parents were a little longer and you know, they stayed married but they still weren’t very happy. @exexec

can get engaged after 2 years. Maybe one year if you see each other daily and talk daily..and ask a LOT of questions about the future..

crownedwithlaurel97 · 26-30, F
2 or 3 years i think
MerryMilkshake · 22-25, M
@crownedwithlaurel97 I agree, 20 or 30 years
I don’t know. People change anyway.
kartoffelkopf2 · 36-40, M
At least a week
Aidan · 26-30
2years yup
I think I’d know within a year or so.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
i only say two cause the first year is usually easy cause it’s new but after another cycle of the same person it’s like reading a book a second time. You see things good and bad that you didn’t notice the first time around. some things can get annoying super fast. @bijouxbroussard
