Started my own business: Things not going so well with my first client?

I’m working from home, have left other jobs to start my own business. Got my first client which is wonderful. She is wanting all my time which is great! But no room for other clients at the moment. I have ALOT of experience working in corporate America, for huge companies - doing sales development/digital marketing. Well this client hired me to plan events and help sell her product, a book. All great, I also have a partner doing the digital media side - well I’ve found myself in this horrible awkward position, because she’s asked us to make this book be huge, aka she just wants people and bookstores to know about it so they can place an order for the book - SO I did what any good business development person would do, I leveraged my access with a very reputable data source where basically we have access to every independent book store in the country. Trying to be honest, and on the same page I let the publisher know what email we would be sending out. Also hoping they would have an end place for me to help independent book stores place a book order (like a link or email). Well NOW it’s completely blown up, the publisher is mad, and now my client is worried about her relationship with them.. and to make it even better a bunch of people are copied on the email threads, very reputable people.. and IT ALL seems to make me look terrible I feel like. The client, now just wants to be upfront with them and explain we have access to the database, what other types of customers other then bookstores can we reach out to (which I support) but the truth is the publisher seems really mad, and I feel like it’s MY fault, and like I did something wrong when in reality I was just trying to help sell the book for a big win for everybody. I’m so embarrassed, and defeated and want to give up - I’m worried I’m going to get fired, with no references when I’m just getting my business off the ground. Any advice ? Anyone have stuff go horrible wrong with a client after having only the best of intentions ? What did you do?

Keep plugging along, regardless. Don’t expect more out of yourself, than you can give. You’re just getting off the ground, so just be patient. You will never please everyone. I know you want to, but inevitably, there’s always one that will get out of shape. Plus, you can’t spend all your time with one client. You’ll learn to even things out as you go along, and they will even out. Just do your best and never give up. You’ve heard the old adage...”Rome wasn’t built in a night.” Well, that’s true. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll soon have other clients who will appreciate your expertise and hard work, and won’t make any bones about spreading the word. If your client isn’t happy, do offer to refund their money, or you might apologize and ask if you could refer them to someone they think might better suit their needs. That way, you’ve shown good faith towards your client, dealt with them in an honest manner, which is a mark of integrity and clients really appreciate, and your client won’t be too quick to criticize.

Gosh really needed this! Thank you so much for your kind words and advice. They really helped! And sure enough, things have smoothed over with this client. I am looking for others and just trying my best thank you so much !@LadyGrace
I’m so happy to hear this. Very much so. I’ve had my own businesses and first and foremost, my motto was always be honest. I’m an honest person anyway. It’s the only way to be, but if businesses would always be honest with their clients, I believe the business, owner of it, and client, will always be blessed. People appreciate it and deserve it. I believe in quality service. If the customer is happy, you’ll be happy. It looks like you’re off to a great start. God bless your business. @Brassm0nk3y

Thank you. 🙂

After a point, you have to stop caring.

We had clients (my wife and I tried a go at a small graphic design firm), who would "forget" to pay us. Then they'd get upset when I would show up at their jobs saying, "Pay me".

That’s good advice. Thanks for saying that. Will try not to care. For us, we make them pay us upfront or we stop working. It’s workes so far. @xixgun

@Brassm0nk3y Well, supposedly, we were working for "friends".
This was the logo that ended up killing the business.
