would it be good for humanity if alcohol was banned for consumption?
I wish alcohol was illegal for consumption. alcohol has had a big impact on my life. It is only truly illegal in nine countries like bangladesh afganastan saudi arabia iran and sudan, they all are in or near the middle east.
some people say that alcohol keeps some people from doing worse things its a way to cope with things for some people and that's why they say it would be worse if it was illegal. I don't agree with that I think its worse to have it ,that people need to find better coping mechanisms and they would if they had no other options.

It might or might not be good but it didn’t work when the US tried to ban it.
XReaganX · 26-30, F
You don't drink alcohol to cope. You drink because it's a leisure. Might as well ban other shit because people can't use them responsibly.
Allelse · 36-40, M
It didn't work last time, all it did was make the mafia rich.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Isn't the countries you mentioned primarily Muslim? And they don't drink the stuff due to religious beliefs.
Beside America tried to ban it once upon a time and that gave rise to organised crime.
It's not that I disagree with you its just I don't see it happening.
@Thevy29 I dont see it happening either.

No. Like others have said, when it was banned before (Prohibition), that didn't go well at all. If anything, there was a lot more drinking, because Americans were (and still are) rebellious by nature. And those who made it illegally sometimes put other harmful stuff in it that shouldn't have been in any beverage. So people became a lot more sick than they do now, with the legal stuff.

What might be helpful, would be if more people realized that alcoholism is actually a symptom of a bigger underlying problem, and looked into the reasons why some people abuse alcohol and actually tried to do something about that. But sadly, too many people seem to just want quick, easy fixes.

Yes please turn our country into a muslim hell. Wonder how you'd look in a burka.
@TheProphet so your for more people drinking alcohol? It dosent have anything to do with religion. in fact some religions drink alcohol as part of their religion.
TheProphet · M
@Girlyfriendcollecting I'm neither for nor against people drinking. I am however violently opposed to Government interference in our lives.
Well prohibition didn’t work so no... it just created underground speakeasies.

They tried that in the US for a bit and it led to widespread crime as mafia syndicates made a fortune in illicit production and smuggling. It failed in very similar ways to the way the war on drugs is failing now. Also, more people than ever are making it themselves at home.

It would have to be a global ban and from there it would be a long, hard road to maybe if we're lucky see some societal improvement.

I'm not a big fan of drinking or intoxication myself. I'd be all fine and dandy if it went away tomorrow. But from both a pragmatic as well as a personal liberty standpoint, I find it hard to fathom doing.

Historically, alcohol has been around for centuries and our societies have still progressed and continues to innovate. It's crossed cultures, is heavily encouraged in multiple religious, festive environments and continues to be consumed to develop friendships, business relations and bond families (lol, I know relations that can't function without it).

By the same token, I've met many people who's lives have been destroyed and haunted by it.
However, I think banning/abstaining from something shows a lack of control and not a healthy way to deal with any social issue.

I honestly believe education is the answer. It helps us understand what, how and why things happen and gives context and empowers people. Otherwise, banning is like hiding in fear of something that might not always be that negative.

Criminal organisations are already making millions thanks to weed, give them also the exclusive on alcohol... Banning something doesn't mean it'll magically disappear, only that it'll be sold illegally.
we tried that in the states, it created a huge criminal class, actually increased damage due to contaminated booze,
and did not stop the problem.

[big]there IS an answer[/big]
but no one likes it.
frogpond · 70-79, M
they tried that once, its called prohibition, results were not very good.
MasterDvdC · 61-69, M
@frogpond "Not very good" is a grand understatement. Truth be told it was a dismal failure.
frogpond · 70-79, M
True, you and I are the same generation and am not sure if prohibition and its result is even taught in school any more.....
MasterDvdC · 61-69, M
@frogpond Saw a Ken Burns documentary on it. Plus Cary Nation was a Methodist and I attended a Methodist Seminary not far from where she lived.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Last time that was tried, it gave organised crime a real leg up in America.

I'd prefer to ban pharmaceutical companies.
@Peaceful where would we get medicine then? I just prefer them to be more honest about how well their medication works.
Only makes people look for another way. Everyone needs an escape.
MasterofNone · 26-30, M
Of course. But there'll be a mass massacre as well.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
It's kind of one of the ways that nature weeds out the stupid. Unfortunately it makes life pretty bad for those attached to the alcoholic or drug user. If folks don't want to stop drinking or using drugs then they might as well check out and make life easier for everyone else.
Coppercoil · M
it's just a symptom of a deeper problem.. that would be just a bandaid fix.. the real problem is fun.. people's desire to relax and have fun. this is what needs to be stopped
Bearserks · 31-35, M

Not banned, just stopped being idolized and promoted like it currently is.

Idk but I’d love that because people act like they’ll die without it
Dshhh · M
i'd lose a lot of money
