Why do people message saying "what's up?". It is hardly a greeting is it?

StevetheSleeve · 31-35, M
It’s the perfect greeting to let you know the person lacks imagination and social skills.

I normally either don't reply or say that I don't understand the question !
Rhonda · F
@SW-User I don't bother replying. If I did, I'd have to tell a complete stranger (of two words) what I was doing.
SW-User
Like cold callers asking if you had a road accident. My reply - "Only once I had a near miss on the way back from disemboweling a telephone sales person !!"

It is a greeting. It's like saying, "How are you? What's new?"
4meAndyou · F
@Rhonda It was first used as a greeting during a 1999 beer commercial during Monday Night football, then it was used repeatedly in the movies Ant Man and the Wasp. Scary Movie also parodied the football ad. It's a pop culture thing.
Rhonda · F
@4meAndyou must be American as I've never heard it before
4meAndyou · F
@Rhonda It's definitely American.
CathyUK · 56-60, F
It's just the new way of saying "hello how are you today?"
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@CathyUK it was back in 2018 lol
Its an informal greeting maybe too young or ghetto for you :)

Good afternoon maaadaammmmm.🤔
Ainny · 41-45, F
I don’t like it either
Rhonda · F
@Ainny it is very rude

People who begin with "Hey" or "what's up?" are almost always fetish or perv people trying to start a sex chat even though my profile says I'm not into that stuff. I guess it's the best they can do.
@AugustRaynes Now that I could see someone complaining about. 😅

@SW-User a hello is nice and polite
Disturbed12 · 26-30, M
When they ask me "What's up?", I reply, "My dick". And then I get blocked. Have I done anything wrong? 🤔
meggie · F
Some sort of American hillbilly greeting I suppose
@meggie It goes back a bit in our lexicon...

Some time if I'm feeling really loose I'll just write. "Wu"
They want to know what you're doing?
Rhonda · F
@midnightrose but surely they could have the manners to say hello first
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Rhonda Hello first😊
xixgun · M
I tend to go with, "What."
Not if you don’t know what it means. 😅
It gets worse

Try when they go "Hi"....

... And that's it!

Oooh - woo me with your words!! 🤦‍♀️🤣
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
From experience, a short answer/reply saves time in doing long ones - some people don’t even have the decency to reply, hence, short initial contact, I think that’s what the ‘heart’ system on SW is for
