I want to know

I’m learning to drive a car. Finding it difficult to shift gear and focus on the road simultaneously. I believe automatic version would be more easier. But I don’t have one. Any tips?

Practice in places where you can sneak a peek and still be safe. As your confidence builds, you will hear and feel when the shift needs to happen.

Get the standard down good. Then you can drive any car. Don’t look at the shifter just feel the gears. You’ll get it.

It just takes time and practice. I learned to drive on a stick...thought I’d never get it. Lol. Now it’s just like breathing. Be patient with yourself and don’t give up.

You just need practice and less conscious of the shift stick.

@SW-User thanks for making me confident. I believe I can do it

@SW-User I should’ve learnt from you

it's the balance of shift pedal and the gas pedal, if you can get that down, the shifting will be much easier.. honestly practice keeping the car running with out moving in first gear.

@MrGoodbar thanks. It’s better now

Patience is key. But you'll be spoiled after learning how to shift. Hard to want to go back to an automatic. It's all about feathering. The perfect proporion of gas and clutch. You'll get there
Just keep at it, I promise it gets easier. Eventually you will learn to feel the car and won’t need to look at the stick. It’s not hard, just takes practice.

@Invocations thanks. It’s much better now

Spend time when not driving, sat with the engine off and just keep changing gears until it becomes second nature

Can you use a keyboard for typing without looking at it?

Sit in a car and practice dropping your hand to the gear stick it'll become natural soon enough.

When I learnt (an awful long time ago!) I found I got to be good at certain aspects and then I got good at other aspects but struggled to do all the aspects at the same time! BUT it all comes together through practice - so please just stick with it and it'll be all good!

Practice in parking lots and roads where you are familiar.

Driving a manual becomes second nature with practice.

If possible, have a friend with you who is already familiar with a stick. When learning a stick, sometimes things don’t feel normal when they really are.

U need first try to focus on the road while driving once u are able to focus on road.. try one hand on wheel while one on gear to shift it.
walabby · 61-69, M
Practice, practice and more practice...

Are you getting the hang of it yet?
