Do you think it's important to retain a sense of humour, even when you know there are people who will misunderstand?

Yes.
Because no matter what you do or what you say, there is always going to be someone or the other offended by it. To please everyone you have to cease existing.
So why not please yourself? As long as you know you're not offensive, you have to let people manage their own sensitivities.

@SW-User Agree, and humour can be very personal as well as important. There's a Laurel and Hardy short, "County Hospital" where the latter ends up hanging out of the hospital window, suspended only by his broken leg. Laughing at that doesn't make me a sadist.

@alan20 Absolutely. And if you think about it, comedy is made up of personal tragedies to take the edge off the darkness of it.
