I thinking about volunteering for Hospice one day a week. Thoughts?

I'm thinking about volunteering to work for Hospice one day a week. They were there for me during both my parents illnesses. Do you think it will makee depressed, or feel like I'm giving back?
SW-User
Absolutely! I worked long term care and with hospice as part of that for 20 years. It's very fulfilling to be able to help people and their loved ones through that difficult time. It does however, take an emotional and mental toll on you which is one reason I no longer work with that population.
Both. That has crossed my mind, as well. If you can do it, I think that would be wonderful. I think it depends on your own emotional state, if you could handle it. If so, I think it would be very rewarding. Let me know what you decide. Best wishes with that.

@LadyGrace I retired from hospital pharmacy, so I've been in that type of environment. I've been retired for a year now. I want to do something that will have a positive impact on someones life. I think I'll check into it today.
I really admire that. Then I think you’ll love it and it will be very rewarding. God bless you for doing so. @Mbingh01

If you can without being triggered, having gone through it I know you know how much families and the dying appreciate hospice workers.

Personally, cancer deaths trigger me too much, I can barely manage my depression as it is.

Bless you for even considering this.
I’d be interested in hearing what you find out, please. @Mbingh01

Sure thing. Add me to your friends list. When I find out I will be happy to let you know.
Thank you. I was thinking of adding you, anyway. @Mbingh01

They are very worthwhile. I have known severtal who used their services, I think they perform a vital function.

It takes a special person to do that....work Hospice. Have been through it with a beloved uncle, my mother, father in law and brother in law. Hospice care is a blessing for the families involved. I don't think I could do it.
So did you do it? How do you like it, if you did?
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@LadyGrace I haven’t yet, but still planning on it.
Very good. I actually think you’ll like it. I think I would, too, helping poor souls like that. @Mbingh01

You`ll need a strong constitution to do it. You need to go into it knowing your going to see some things you`ll not like. Good luck should you decide to go for it.
So did you do it since then? How do you like it?

I think it'll give you a great sense of giving back. I take my hat off to you!

@SteveTomms thank you.

You're the one deserving of thanks! But you're welcome.
If you are up to it - AND have the necessary training - you will learn a lot.
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@Melies I plan to go through whatever training is required. I retired from a hospital, so I already am prepared for what I'm getting into.
[@I have learned a lot from two friends who do it professionally.

Really depends on the individual. Only way you’ll know is to try it.
Volunteer! Bringing some cheer to others is a reward in itself!

I work in Aged Care. We need more volunteers.

Both... at the same time.
I think it all depends on how you intend to use it. You could allow it to make you depressed, or you could be uplifted by it. Is there something in particular you would care to say to the patients there?

It could be tough but try it keeping in mind that if it isn't for you you can always change your mind.

It would be a great thing to give back but.... it will be depressing , especially during Christmas.

I have no respect for hospice, but I couldn't do it, it does take a special person
Did you end up working there, and if so, how do you like it?
