@Tminus6453 I'll never understand the narrow front axle
Tminus6453 · M
@TheWildEcho It made it hard to steer, at least for me

@TheWildEcho it is a row tractor that allows you to make very tight turns in the middle of the rows without running over any of the plants. Brilliant idea that worked well. That old JD only had one cylinder and when it idles you can see the whole tractor rocking back and forth since the piston runs horizontal to the frame.

@hippyjoe1955 I'm learning so much

@TheWildEcho Ha ha yeah I grew up on a ranch that had nothing but antique tractors. We had an old Field Marshal that you started with a shot gun shell. The engine could run forward or backward so you had to be careful when you started it.

@Tminus6453 we had an old Farmall with the narrow wheels. Fine to stay between rows in the fields but otherwise was often a problem. With a heavily loaded front bucket it was really a beast. But we used it anyway for 30 years.

@Rambler Yes we had a Farmall too. Narrow wheels and all. We didn't put a front end loader on it. Our old Minnie U was our loader tractor.
Rambler · M
Yeah,the loader was not the right way to equip the narrow front tractor. But you know how it is, you use what you have, and we needed the loader.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Rambler yes exactly. The steering was light enough when there was no load on the front end but I would hate to try to steer it with a 1500 lbs bale on the front of it.
Rambler · M
For us it was usually fumigant drums at 750 lbs per. Brutal. But with a rotary mower in back for counterweight, it worked...but hard as hell on those little front tires.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Rambler Yes it would have been. Those little farmalls would go like stink in road gear. Almost scary to drive them full throttle.

I loved that thing. I think I could still find the controls with my eyes closed and I haven’t seen it for almost 40 years.
