I saw a documentary on this. Vampires won due to their speed although they were no match for a zombie horde.

One on one it is the vampire easily. Once you get to vampire vs. Horde, it gets into exactly what powers and weaknesses the vampire possesses. A thing like flight allows placement of coffin in unreachable and untrackable locations for the horde. No flight and then daytime brings victory to a horde.
