is google translate viable?

sometime when i chat to people who speak a different language i use google translate to communicate but ive never been on the recieving end of it so i dont know how effective it is n now i worry how it looks to them 馃槺

Mostly, yes. I run everything both ways to clarify a bit more. Like translating from english to dutch. Then copy and paste the dutch translation and translate it to english. You'll find more errors that way.

I've been using it for texting between me and the pupil I'm tutoring in English as a second language. I have the feeling it's probably a bit clunky, but so far the meaning gets through.

It is not. For single words - perhaps. Run this simple french phrase through their translator. 'tireur-au-flanc' and see what it says!
