moral question

say there is someone who goes out of his way to help many people. is he a good person if the reasons he does so are selfish?
kimmy159 · F
There is a saying that nothing is truely altruistic. If we help people, it's because helping them makes us feel good / better about ourselves. In a way it's true, but on the other hand, if good deeds come out of it, I would still think of that person as a good person.
it does depend on what the person gets in return to me personally. If it's just hapiness from being able to help someone, I would find them very good people, if it's reputation, success, future contacts, I might doubt their intentions to begin with.

@kimmy159 i suppose thats fair. :)

@NeloAngelo I see you're very interested to know how everyone feels about politicians doing good deeds to further their campaign. How do you personally feel about it?

The way I see it, people often have 2 sides to them. Those who need the good opinion of others in their career, will always act nicer in the spotlight. And that makes them good people in the spotlight.
The way they are outside of the spotlight can be different, but it doesn't make their good deeds undone either.
I guess what I mean to say is, as long as they don't cause harm outside of the spotlight, I can see them as good people. And... if you can have the best of both worlds, why not try to obtain it for yourself lol.

@kimmy159 it was the clearest example i could think of. mostly its any good deed for any selfish reasons.

personally i like them more. they seem more honest.

Everything we do is selfish. First and foremost it is for ourselves and how it makes us feel.
So if caring for others make them feel good, I say that is good.

He is a poser.

If you are only good when the cameras are rolling, you are performing.

NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@GwydionFrost so not a good person but also not a bad one?
GwydionFrost · 56-60, M
@NeloAngelo BINGO. It is great that they are filling the void, but if a better opportunity comes along, they will drop it without a second thought.
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@GwydionFrost i suppose that's the better way of looking at it. 🤔
No matter who the person, God always looks at motives.

I think being a good person is about doing something for others even if it's just meant to make us feel good about ourselves. The vain feeling afterwards doesn't matter as long as people can benefit from our good deeds. We define ourselves through our actions rather than what we feel about ourselves because that's the closest way we can get to the reality of who we are.

The reasons are always selfish, it's inherent. Whether it's for self gratification, to right a wrong, getting a place in heaven, if you are going out of your way, as in not being paid then there's always a selfish reason.

The deed is good the reason, mostly irrelevant!

@SW-User thats pretty much the way i see it too. ^_^

That doesn't make someone a good person, it is doing it for the ego or to feel good about themselves, but it sure isn't a bad thing to DO good

If you help someone and expect something in return, you're not doing kindness, you're doing business
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@Salix75 thats not really that bad. cool way to think about it :D

never yet heard a politician or celeb stay quiet on the issue if "they've been seen" getting involved in anything that benefits others.

The cynic in me is always curious as to how there's film footage or photos of them 'at work' suddenly in the media.
coary987 · M
I help a lot of people but a lot can't understand why I help them because I don't want nothing in return.
coary987 · M
@NeloAngelo depends on what they wanted back.
I don't like thanks ether I get all the thanks I need when I see them happy.
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@coary987 say a politician helps many homeless people for publicity. yes people are helped and thats good but its only to further his campaign so selfish.
coary987 · M
@NeloAngelo Yes I understand but he could just be a genuine nice guy
Biffed · 26-30, M
selfish in what way
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@Biffed like there only doing it because in some way there getting something back. like publicity for a political campaign as an example.
Only his conscience knows that!
