Seriously people. There is nothing wrong with owning a firearm for self defense

Graylight · 51-55, F
Except that statistically, you're 8 times more likely to be shot with your own handgun then you are to use it on someone else.

Except that in real world testing, the majority of women weren't even able to remove a handgun in time from their bags in order to stop a bad guy.

Except that accidental shootings involving both adults and children occur every single day in the US.

Except that there are plenty of non-lethal and very effective alternatives for self-defense, and most of us will never need such things.

You want a gun for self-defense? Great, it's the law of the land and has been supported by scotus. Just know it's not nearly as effective as most people think it is.

@strangerthanfiction You said it deters crime...clearly it doesn't. Crims know cops carry guns, does it stop them wanting to be crims? Obviously not.

You need to protect yourself from other people who own a gun for self defence.....
Shutterbug · 56-60, M
@Dusty101 there was a doco I watched on why. The u was dropped as Americans, after the revolution, wanted their own language. But they also have influences as well from Dutch and French settlers as well, like ketchup. Etc.
Dusty101 · F
@Shutterbug it's very interesting alright!
TexChik · F
@Shutterbug and ... as a result of Brit tyrannical influence , we also have a constitution and rights that are guaranteed so that something like what the Brits did will never happen again .
JarJarBoom · 41-45, F
I managed to live on this earth for 38 years and don't own a gun...its a miracle.
TexChik · F
@JarJarBoom I’m not quite that old 😉... and none of our guns have ever broken out of the vaults and killed anyone . If you don’t like em then don’t touch em...
Cruiser91 · 51-55, M
@TexChik so true

There is also a matter of not everyone lives in a city, many people live in rural areas and work outside with wooded areas nearby. Those areas contain wolves, bears, coyotes, mountain lions, etc. Try fighting those off with a stick.

Word.
Having said that, that very sane person who has a firearm for defense could go insane from some trauma or bottled feelings, and now it's a huge issue.
Guns make us more powerful, like cars. It's good in the hands of good, and bad in the hands of bad. Just a tool.
VolpeTredici · 31-35, M
@KingLionHeart Very concise answer. Thanks for your input.
Ok then
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
Until you shoot your wife because she pissed you off...or your neighbor...or you know, until your kid gets ahold of the gun and goes and shoots up a school. But hey! Keep that second amendment right to protect yourself. I mean..when is the last time your house was broken into? When was the last time you were attacked?

I can protect myself in many ways. No need for a gun.

@JaggedLittlePill like AR-15s or anything with a magazine

@JaggedLittlePill actually my house was broken into about 3 weeks ago and guess what me having my gun and chambering a round is what got him out, or it could have been me pointing it at his head.
If you want I can even show you the police report and *gasp* the video from my security cam of him running like a little bitch out the front door. But that's ok stay in your little bubble hun with your gun free zones.
TexChik · F
I’m a believer ! We have plenty and I carry ... 😁
@TexChik Springfield XD is my daily carry with a Mossberg I keep next to the bed. I haven't shot them in awhile but I also have my Dad's Mosin Nagant, M-14 and 1911 he left me.
yeronlyman · 51-55, M
[image deleted]Yep

Howver, not much self defence in these stats
Not if you're responsible about owning and using it.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@black4white precisely my point
black4white · 56-60, M
@JaggedLittlePill i dont get your point... i am a very well repsonsible gun owner i own minimal 10 weapons... and have never came close to any kind of incident...so when people say they are responsible gun owner its kinda like saying you are a good friend/parent/sibling...some are and some are not and the only way you know is thru time
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
You just made my point. Who is to decide what people are actually going to be responsible? They can all claim to be ...and still do something irresponsible.
Tracos · 51-55, M
I have never known anybody who needed one... even in hindsight from the third person perspective
TexChik · F
@Tracos it’s not about your perception of need , it’s about a person’s right to keep and bear arms ...
Tracos · 51-55, M
oh we dont have that right here.... you go to jail for having one.. not sure how long come to think of it...
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
I own many. I carry every where I go. If you don’t like guns, don’t have one. Just as I don’t like soccer, so I don’t watch it.
DownTheStreet · 51-55, M
Or for sport, or recreation ... it is after all a constitutional right
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Every one should own at least one
Cassandra1 · 36-40, T
Absolutely agree i own 2
needsmilk808 · 56-60, M
Slappaho · 41-45, M
There’s nothing wrong with owning a firearm for offense either, or fun, or any other reason. It’s a constitutional right
