Yeah the cake one was teicky for mw too at first but its exactly what @strongernow if you eat the cake its gone. You can't it back. So its like you cant have everything. You can't have it both ways.

I'm not sure to what degree you are joking, but it means being caught between 2 equally hard places, usually a metaphor for 2 difficult choices or 2 outcomes that are equally difficult to deal with.
