There seem to be two subjects which are almost guaranteed to lead to nastiness - politics and religion. Is it impossible for people to listen calmly

to views they disagree with and maybe even discover a seed of doubt in their own beliefs?

That's right. It is partly due to a thing called cognitive dissonance. Our brains have issues with being presented with evidence which is contrary to a long held belief.

@Mamapolo2016 As ever. enjoy your posts MP
@Robert I know it likely looks like my post...but this isn't

Welll, no, but I enjoyed your contribution - without shouting about it - 😉
It's possible for me, because I don't know everything yet. If both sides could be respectful, yea, it would be possible.

@Mamapolo2016 I find that those of us who think they know the most often know the least. And yes, it is about respect.
@alan20 It isn't might that makes right anymore, it's volume. If I can yell louder, I win.
alan20 · M
@Mamapolo2016 I've a lot of sympathy with that view.

It's not impossible. One example of it is one of the women from Westboro Baptist Church. I think it was their pastor's oldest granddaughter who ran their website. She debated online all the time with a Jewish man she met. It eventually led to her leaving the church.

@SW-User Once had an atheist friend who regularly debated things with a Catholic priest. Neither changed their views but were able to maintain respect.
SW-User
@alan20 more of us should strive to do that.
alan20 · M
@SW-User I agree very much.

Honestly, I think religion-debate is probably one of the very few things that has actually gotten more civil since that maxim first emerged. A lot of other things could be added to the list nowadays though. Political discourse is getting nearly as lowbrow as it was in the latter half of the 19th century. Not to mention that about two-thirds of the population seem to have been erroneously convinced that things like "gender issues" and gun control count as "politics". Meanwhile, I would be impressed if one American who reads this could correctly state the number of wars their country is currently involved in.

Yeah too bad too because everyone can learn a different perspective.
alan20 · M
@SimplyTracie One should at least be open to the possibility. Some seem to be able to exist without doubt; not me.
SW-User
That is why these debates are pointless to have.
alan20 · M
@SW-User It seems sad that one can only have them with oneself!
fazer1k · 56-60, M
And yet people still keep bringing those subjects up - often in extreme or mocking ways that are almost certain to be inflammatory. You have to wonder, then, if those who raise these topics do so because they enjoy the heated debates or 'nastiness' that follows.
alan20 · M
@fazer1k In the school playground there were always those who'd shout "A fight, a fight" and would go running to watch. I'm sure that's behind a lot of it. I bring it up because every so often I do have the occasional niggling doubt and wonder if another mind might throw some light on it.
fazer1k · 56-60, M
@alan20 I'm sure there are people who will gladly debate without nastiness, but I doubt it could ever work quite as you wish in an open forum where everyone, including those who enjoy the antagonistic element of these debates, can join in. Private messaging a couple of people you trust, from each camp, may work better for someone with genuine questions and a desire to fully appreciate both sides.
DreamingOfSummer · 26-30, F
It sure seems to be impossible on SW.
alan20 · M
@DreamingOfSummer Its one reason I've come to keep off both topics on this site. A shouting match doesn't lead to anything construciive.
SW-User
pretty much yeah, because both return the same issue! Money!
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Mamapolo2016 Somewhat counter-productive...lol ☺
I really enjoy your humour Polo.
SW-User
@Mamapolo2016 then money as nothing to do with any of it, politics nor religion and at any level. There. Problem solved.
@SW-User No, I think you're right about money being a big influence. I just think it doesn't power religious discussions at this level.

I have been wrong before. I can only speak definitely on a personal level. I've never made a plugged nickel from religion or lack thereof.
For 90% of ppl yes its impossible
alan20 · M
@terribleperson Why, would you say?
