How would an American feel if they discovered overnight their state had left the U.S. and they were no longer American?
I feel like that over Brexit.

I'm VERY pro Europe and grew up visiting many parts of Europe and still love to visit Europe whenever I can, but all the reasons to stay in the EU seem to be based on scare-mongering and financial concerns. I don't think we can get out of the EU soon enough and I hope most of the rest of Europe free themselves too.
I live in Wales and we've worked very hard for years to improve the number of Welsh speakers and support for the language. The EU have already announced the plan (see their website) to rationalise the number of languages in the EU to 5 and Welsh obviously isn't on that list. Presumably, the ultimate aim when reducing the supported languages is to reduce the entire grouping to one standardised language at some point in the far future.
I believe our cultures, our national identities, etc. are important and this ongoing homogenisation of rules, laws, currency, systems, colours, language, descriptions etc. is mostly serving global business and dehumanising us.
We won't stop being European but maybe, just maybe, it will give the EU the shock it needs.

@NakedExperiment I see the EU as an ideal. What's wrong with neighbours living in harmony, agreed standards to enable them to trade freely,even willingness to help the less well off neighbours, not blind friendship but intelligent respectful friendship. No one believes more than I in the value of different cultures - the world would be a poorer place without Beethoven, Debussy, Vaughan Williams. It has its defects but nothing like as bad as the prejudiced right-wing press like The Daily Mail would have people believe. Obviously if a country leaves an economic union there have to be consequences, not least Britain trying to ingratiate itself with every tin-pot dictator and human rights abuser on the planet, desperate to get their trade. With regard to language nobody is more committed to their own than the Dublin Government who have no problem with it.

@TexChik Don't see why. Nationalism has led to all kinds of evils not least in Europe, where we all share centuries of history and interaction. Churchill was actually one of the first to see a coming together of Europe as a worthwhile ideal and way of lessening chances of future conflict. Helping one's less well-off neighbours is surely more laudable than beating them down.

I suppose it would depend on whether that state was being treated fairly. Do US states pay a lot more into the US than other states. I have no idea. Do hard working US states subsidise other states. I have no idea. Do US states get dictated to by Brussels, sorry I meant Washington. I have no idea. Are US and EU the same sort of thing? I have no idea.
