My new house is run by gas and I'm nervous to use the kitchen cause I've never had gas before... Is there anything I should know for saftety?

When you turn on an element make sure it lights before you turn the knob to the non click settings. The clicking sound is the igniter and it is possible to release gas without lighting the gas. Gas is a very good choice and makes much nicer meals than electric. You made a great choice.
@hippyjoe1955 OMG thank you. I finally got it!!!

@MushroomFaerie Way to go!!! Yes gas stoves are truly wonderful and you never have to worry about an element burning out on you.
@hippyjoe1955 the result is different... The food is less dry or something. Thanks heaps I was really starting to panic haha

It's a lot safer now than it was 50 years ago. Just don't stand too close while wearing loose clothing. Most gas stoves are self igniting so when you turn it on, it lights instantly.

My only suggestion is, if you come home after being out for a long while, go, check the pilot light to be sure it is still lit. If not, opened some windows and turn the gas off at the source. Wait a while before turning it back on and lighting the pilot light. And for goodness sake don't light a cigarette before checking the stove. That's the quickest way to find out, but not the best way.
@Serenitree I don't understand any of that. What is a pilot light and what am I looking for at the source?

@MushroomFaerie When you turn on the stove,,does the burner light by itself or do you need to us a match or lighter?

Under the stove top there's a small flame.

That's the pilot light.

You should call, the gas company to show you where the shut off valve is, for your stove.

Make sure it lights on the range. If it does not shut it off.

If you smell gas, run!

@MushroomFaerie Search YouTube, there are videos. Go to a store that sells them and ask.
@JoyfulSilence Hippy Joe sorted me out. I don't have access to YouTube at the moment and I was trying to use the kitchen at that time so I came here... As you do

@MushroomFaerie I am glad you figured it out! Enjoy cooking! Make some hot tea and relax!

It’s pretty damn safe... if everything is self lighting... it’s easy

Turn it off when you’re done.
