Hardcastle, by John Yount (1980). A novel about coal mining in Kentucky during the Great Depression. Out of print once again, but should be considered Great American Literature!

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and it's follow-up Bring Out the Bodies. Both won Man Booker prizes.

Best historical novels I've read. Her research is impeccable. The dialogue is brilliant. Her descriptions are eloquent and evocative. The world she enters you into, the character studies, the intrigue...

Not a book for dumb people.
