Why do we use the word heart for emotional purposes?

Like "heart VS brain" dilemmas or "you're in my heart" etc. I mean, it's just muscle and can only pump blood through our bodies. We are our brains.

Even though emotions are centered in the brain, a strong rush of emotion such as fear, anger or love pumps adrenalin to the heart. This accelerates the heart beat. So prior to scientific advancements, the heart was thought to be responsible for emotions.

The heart has a brain. It's interesting. It's the only organ in the human body that has a brain of it's own. I think philosophy is wonderful subject, and I have to agree that the heart is the place where love lives, even though the mind does most of the work.

@puck61 Show me an academic book or a an academic professor who claims so. I'm waiting...
@HannibalAteMeOut It's common knowledge you silly person.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@puck61 common knowledge because of "my heart will go on"? Lol really every single doctor and medical professor is tearing their diplomas apart right now 😂 ask yourself how are heart transplantations common while brain transplantations aren't possible? Do you think the people who have heart transplants love the ones that their heart donor did?

Lol that's what I wondered for many years, and as far as I know all the world does this.. All I can come up with the fact that our heart beats faster when we see someone we love, so ancient people might've related it with the heart..Maybe?
covfefe234 · 31-35, M
@HannibalAteMeOut I know, I just said to confuse you :P How about we call the actual heart "heart" and the ❤ "kalp" ? :D
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@covfefe234 deal 🤝🏽
covfefe234 · 31-35, M
@HannibalAteMeOut it won't cause any problems as i rarely i use that word anyways :D

I read the Chinese believe we are our stomachs, that all filters thru that organ
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@blendednotshaken that certainly applies to me 😂 food is my love
LucyCan · 26-30, F
Our hearts beat faster when in love. That's why we blush.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
I think it's just shorthand for that part of our thinking that we don't rationally understand. Like how we can be attracted to people who we know are terrible for us.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Xuan12 but why the heart? Why not liver or lungs? 😆
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
@HannibalAteMeOut Perhaps because it's so palpable, we can hear and feel it's beating.

The intrinsic cardiovascular nerve system is a brain.

@puck61 I can't believe you actually think a link to a website that mentions the HeartMath Institute (which is not a research center, but another website) is enough to erase centuries of experiments and PRACTICAL research. Have you even seen a brain or a heart? Have you read any REAL books on neurology, cardiology, internal anatomy, physiology? Have you ever attended a basic human anatomy class? I'm always amazed at how people think that 5 minutes of a google search can make you an accurate doctor or scientist in general. There are people who've studies their whole lives in order just to conclude on what the hippocampus is and you think that a link to a website which mentions no names of real scientists and universities and research centers can do the job. My deep condolences.
@HannibalAteMeOut I've known that the heart has a brain for a long time. I don't know why you are so resistant to the idea.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@puck61 you aren't medical authority and I've read anatomy books, I've watched surgeries and I've seen a heart and a brain as well as other organs up close. You can't support your argument because you don't even know how to make a proper, valid syllogism. You're just dogmatizing and aren't offering proof. Anyone who has been to elementary school knows what a brain looks like and where it is.

blame Hallmark
Fernie · F
@HannibalAteMeOut I guessed it because you are a gerber (another reference you won't get probably) Hallmark made lovey dovey greeting cards all about love and the heart...still do
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Fernie so many unknown words 😥 Ahh I see, I've never used such cards or seen any 😄

@HannibalAteMeOut Unless you're playing some trivia game...you don't even have to know

@WelcomeToHell That explains the term brokenhearted, but we use it for love in general, not just pain that comes from love.

From now on we use endometrium
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Deadcutie what about men? 🤔 epididymis ?
caccoon · 36-40
I think that it's just because people find such a tug o' war between the logical and the emotional. It seems like they should be separate. It all happens in the brain, but the pain, or ecstatic fluttering is in the heart, so we use the heart as a metaphor for the emotional. I guess.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@caccoon That makes sense 🖤
