If you want a movie that does a way better job at talking about the experience of being an American soldier without the usual Hollywood bullshit, might I recommend Hurt Locker? Several veterans that I've talked with named it the closest non-documentary movie to what they feel their service was like, cinema-wise.

NOT a realistic depiction of EOD.

Though probably still one of the most realistic movies out there.... kinda.

@User41 ok I have only a small level of experience talking to vets. So I was just curious.
Thank you.

@User41 Yeah, I don't know anything about the accuracy of EOD - I recommended it solely on the basis of a combat vet remarking that he felt that the tension and anxiety of the movie, coupled with some specific scene, encapsulated how he felt about his time deployed. I don't know what exactly it was, but who am I to second-guess?

If we're talking war movies that I'd recommend, I don't think that I'd recommend many American movies - and certainly no movies that try to make "heroes".

He's also full of shit. Read his book. He shot folks from the top of the super dome during Katrina if you believe what he wanted you to. He didn't do so well with Jesse Ventura either.
Hero maybe. Soldier of fortune definitely. Full of shit certainly. Respected by other seals NOT really. Only what's required.

I haven't seen it yet. But all our military are heroes, including Mr. Kyle. Yes, heroes. You don't have to do something dramatic to be a hero, the fact that you put yourself out there is heroic.
