When I went to school they were call riffs but maybe the terms have changed.

@manandwoman Ok you didn't have to on my part. I wasn't sure if the terminology hasn't changed. lol. I don't keep up with slang that changes on a whim.

@manandwoman Riff simply meant a musician used his/her instrument to create otherwise unwritten music as he played. That was called a riff. It may also apply to altering a written piece to make it sound similar but different.

Many do.I saw a studios musicians notes on a song. It was specifically marked when and how it was going to be played. He was talented @SW-User
