Why do we deny ourselves the things we really want just because society says we shouldn't want them?

sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Oh, idk, because jail. 😐
Nat15 · F
@sarabee1995 What is something that you would go to jail for? Now I am curious.
KandiGhostcat · 22-25, F
@Challenger1 Who knows. But I know it probably can't be good.

Sometimes "society" is right as it generally leads to good public health
Sunujing · 46-50, M
True...there is wisdom and foolishness in the collective mind
Nat15 · F
@Sunujing so true!

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. --Thoreau

That being said, society is right about a few things...unprotected sex and heroin should be avoided and sunscreen is your friend
LadyWioness · 56-60, F
Fear of what others think is a big one.
LadyWioness · 56-60, F
@Nat15 that's the plan. I'll be the ancient lady that runs people over in my Hover round, and backs up to be sure! 😂

@Nat15 😝
"Society" has a mob mentality and rarely practices what it preaches.
Nat15 · F
The majority is not always right and then society bends the rules to whatever it wants. @HungJury

@HungJury often those that preach one thing are completely kinkyin real life. Like all priests out there having sex with young boys.

@tupolevtu144 That's what it comes down to, isn't it? How much weight do you wanna carry to fulfill your dreams and desires? Sometimes the load is just too heavy.

I don't think society has its priorities in order
Nat15 · F
@SW-User On some things I'd agree
Also, what if what we really want isn't what's right? To be cliché and all, Hitler thought he was right and so pushed for what he wanted. Maybe we think what we want should be okay, but maybe we leave open that little bit of a doubt because we don't want to be like that one guy.
Nat15 · F
I understand that. But as someone said earlier, maybe guidelines like the Golden Rule should keep us in check. :)@froggtongue
That's a real good question. I think it's to show our willingness to be a part of the society surrounding us. That which we call public image. And because it takes less energy to not have to fight for something even though you want it.
Nat15 · F
@froggtongue I guess that's what it comes down to....do we have the fight. And is it worth the fight and the energy.
AnneHoney · 36-40, F
We shouldn't, society is always generations behind in its thinking. The curse of the crazy Puritans that were driven out of England and screwed up the USA thinking here for hundreds of years. If society knew best Arab countries would not still have its attitudes towards women.
Be brave and do your own thing.
TheotherAndy · 41-45, M
Could not agree more!
SW-User
Society is a bitch. I suppose some of us just aren't up for the fight.
Nat15 · F
@SW-User Some things are worth fighting for. Others are not. But yeah.
SW-User
freud asked the same question
Nat15 · F
@SW-User lol Just call me Sigmund :P
I want to ride a fast motorbike at three times the speed limit... run from the cops...

I want to do too many stupid things...

But I am a responsible member of semi functioning society.
SW-User
I do what I want and live my life by my own moral code. Yes I do obey laws that will get me put in jail, but what others think are wrong or immoral I don't let it stop me.
SW-User
the way to obtain that would be illegal.
AnneHoney · 36-40, F
No one ever breaks any laws@SW-User

caesar7 · 61-69, M
