Is listening to sad songs a kind of masochism or catharsis?

The Notebook was recently discussed, and it made me go and listen to this song, and it tore me up something fierce!

that song inspired this :) :(

Where have you been,
I have looked for you forever and you were suddenly there,

You made me smile, you made me laugh and even cry,
My days passed with purpose when you were here,

Hey, I miss you, yes I miss you,
I tried to catch a wish in the wind and tried to bring you back,
But the wish slipped through my fingers and you are still gone,

Where have you been,
Hey... I miss you and always will, I don't want to stop looking,

You made me smile, you made me laugh and even cry,
I wonder how you are and what you're doing?

I miss you, yes I miss you,
Memories are slipping away in the wind, is it too hard to bring you back?
I often wonder if there is a tomorrow when I will see, hear and feel you in my heart and soul, up close again,

Where have you been, I will never stop looking for you or will I ever lose hope,
You still make me smile, laugh and even cry,

Where have you been, I am tired of chasing memories in the wind,
Where have you gone, you understood me better than anybody else,

Why can't you simply tell me if you are doing okay?
Why must I continue to wonder to this very day, how you are doing in making your way,

Where have you been?
The answer is just blowing in the wind.... .... .... ....

I think it's definitely both. I have quite a few that do that to me. The most recent is "Sleep Well My Angel" by We Are The Fallen.
@SW-User Now, I'll have to go see how well that shreds me!

@puck61 It has one of my favorite lines of lyrics EVER in it. I think you'll appreciate it as a writer even if it doesn't hit you the way it did me.
I'm such a sentimental sap for a barbaric fatalist!

When I first heard The Smith's "There is a Light that Never goes Out" I thought, man that song is gonna destroy people who are depressed!
Over the years many many people have gone to great lengths to disabuse me of my wrong-headed notions! Course The Smiths have that sense of irony that is unique. I still prefer to go faster, harder and rock loud if I'm down..whatever gets you through the night....
