Is marriage a good idea?

It depends on what you want and need in a relationship.
I found that marriage helped my long term relationship,
because it was the moment when we finally made a serious commitment to each other in front of our friends and community.
It turned off the relationship radar scanner.
But no relationship is easy.
Marriage is not a romantic thing.
It's hard work and requires proactively learning the skills of communication, emotional intelligence, and problem solving.
A good marriage is definitely the best situation for children, irrespective of faith or belief.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
100% agree it is not romantic all the time, it is a partnership. I've had many people disagree with me on that. My wife and I are not really romantically engaged with each other, but we are still partners and parents to our daughter. If you dispense with all the unrealistic ideas that life is going to be warm and fuzzy forever marriage is good.

I think that usually a pair bond is the best way for a child to grow up but excluding abusive relationships of course. @clothos:
@JimboSaturn: Agreed, dysfunctional relationships harm the child and provide bad role models: abuse, neglect, drug addictions... so many things can go seriously wrong. Separation or divorce is better for children if it protects them from harm.

If your willing to wait and search for.the right person and y'all.galk things out and learn A L L each bothers ups and downs, and one and outs and likes and dislikes and fears, and confidences, and hopes and dreams, and if you two can really trust and respect each bothers and if it feels.like your hearts beat to be rytem.of each others spirits, and if your smiles are brighter than the morning sun to each other and if your laughter is music to each other then yeah do it.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@Groofydorkgerdo: I learned my lesson seeing may parents fighting like cats and dogs before splitting. Same happened with next door couple
Groofydorkgerdo · 56-60, M
@Unloved: Me to.mybwife and I are seperated but our fighting is done.Now we are all lovey dovey and cuddly and snuggly until.she move to Arkansas.
So.yeah try and make sure it's real so I say edge into.esch relationshiop' slow and easy and observe EVERYTHING about it and him
CaptainCanadia · 41-45, M
It can be. But here's a different way to look at it - it's fine to not be married. I married my wife after six years together because we wanted to grow older a little together and figure out how we were changing over time.

If you get married young and early, you must recognize that you and your partner will change in ways you can't expect. and they may not be changes you like.
Pineapple · 100+, F
Not something I'm ever doing
Unloved · 22-25, F
@Pineapple: Meaning not good idea.
Marriage is extremely difficult, but rewarding in so many ways. It requires lots of compromise by both partners and acceptance of the other person's faults, etc.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@ColleenOhara: A pain really
@Unloved: I have been married forever...marriage is work for sure.
Shadowstep · 26-30, M
No because you don't need a piece of paper binding you two together, it's freaking pointless.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@Shadowstep: Bad idea then
Shadowstep · 26-30, M
@Unloved: well you two can buy rings to show that you two are together, but spending all that money just for a honeymoon and a piece of paper? Nah I'd rather just be committed to her with spending extra money or time
fazer1k · 56-60, M
If you have to ask it's probably not.
fazer1k · 56-60, M
@Unloved: Probably not then. When it's right you will know.
Unloved · 22-25, F
Do we ever really get to know
fazer1k · 56-60, M
@Unloved: I believe you will know when the idea of marriage feels right to you. Even that is no guarantee of having a successful long term marriage, of course, but it's a much safer bet than starting out with reservations.
Ramrod · 46-50, M
It all depends on the people involved.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@Ramrod: Marriages keep failing
Ramrod · 46-50, M
@Unloved: It is the way society is today,people don't stay together the way they used to.
It is important to some people as a symbolic celebration of their love for another person. Legally it has become somewhat irrelevant in many western countries because for example in Canada common law partners ie someone you live with for at least a years in entitled to all the same rights as a spouse anyway.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow: that's convenient
@Unloved: In some ways. In other ways it sucks. You date someone and live with them for a year they can leave and take half your assets with them.
SW-User
For some it is
SW-User
@Unloved: Mine did not...but others have.
It really depends on what you want and what you are committed to. You can't make it work when only one is committed to seeing it through.
Unloved · 22-25, F
Do people ever get to know what they really want?
SW-User
@Unloved: Well 50 % apparently
Degbeme · 70-79, M
If I had to do it over again... I wouldn`t.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@Degbeme: once bitten twice shy
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Unloved: So they say.
[c=#BF0080]LOLOLOLOL[/c] Yes provided the idea is not given a shape.
SW-User
For some people, but for most probably not it takes a lot of work and effort most aren't willing to put into it.
SW-User
@Unloved: remove hope from the equation and get to know them very well before getting into a relationship :)
Unloved · 22-25, F
Do people ever really get to know what they truly want.
Marriage is no good idea
SW-User
@Unloved: they never know everything about each other but enough to know if they can get along and be together and function as a couple
SW-User
It's a noble institution.
Marriage is a fantastic idea! But not very practical for the everyday human in this day and age.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@Discombobulatedbunny: how can it be fantastic then?
@Unloved: The partnership of marriage. The idea of two people coming together to create something bigger than they themselves. Working towards a common goal. being in love and actually giving more than just a fuck about each other. Having someone in your life that you can always depend on no matter what, even if they disagree with you, they are with you.
But people don;t really do this anymore.
The problem is not marriage itself, its the expectations and efforts of those getting married. When someone gets married because their partner is hot, the whole point of marriage is already lost on that person. When you talk to a soon to be bride and she thinks her marriage is going to last two or three years and then she pans to move on, she totally misses the point. When someone gets married because they love the dress and want a big party it makes people facepalm for miles around.
Unloved · 22-25, F
They only create problems for each other.Always on the lookout for some extra fun
AlmostAnAngel · 100+, F
For many yes...it takes the willingness to grow together...sadly many grow apart.
NigelDoes · 56-60, M
Most relationships end up failing. Divorce isn't something I would ever want want to experience.
AlmostAnAngel · 100+, F
@Unloved: There are as many reasons to that question than there are planets in our solar system. I do believe that people mistake lust for love. It takes time to get to know someone. And it takes both being honest about who they really are in the beginning. What they want in life etc.

It works for some and not for others.

My parents have been married for many years as were my grandparents before them.

It's a scary situation for me!
Reject · 26-30, M
It can be, but be careful with who. I can not stress that enough!
Reject · 26-30, M
@Unloved: Right, they more often fail because people weren't ready for it. Marriage should happen after like 15 years with someone so you know the feelings won't just go away later.
Unloved · 22-25, F
Fifteen years of dating?
Reject · 26-30, M
@Unloved: At least.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
A stable pair bong makes life more fun. However I don't believe it's the final end all and be all ;)
Unloved · 22-25, F
@JimboSaturn: Risky business.
Like anything else it can be good or bad. It is all in the execution.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow: execution flops 50 per cent times
@Unloved: No argument there. I think some people get married for all the wrong reasons so it is doomed to fail like any relationship done for the wrong reasons. ie getting married because you had a baby with someone, doing it because you think that is what people are supposed to do etc.
Unloved · 22-25, F
Doesn't make sense...this marriage thing

Marriage is the greatest adventure 2 people can have. The hardest thing you can do but has rewords that can not be matched by anything.
SW-User
relationship in itself is a bad idea. attachments are a bad idea.
Unloved · 22-25, F
@theowl: meaning single is good?
SW-User
for my experience it is.. no one getting hurt. people suck and dont know how to have relationships or how to keep them going.
LighDefiant · 36-40, M
Not anymore the way it's currently set up. Unless you need the tax break, what's the point?
SerenitiesScars · 31-35, M
Only if you're completely in love...
SerenitiesScars · 31-35, M
Well I just know that's the only reason I'd bother marrying someone.
Unloved · 22-25, F
Doesn't work. Reality is something quite different
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Marriage is not the only way or necessary a permenant way to find happiness that's for sure.

With the right person for you, yes. I was not with the right person, but when it worked, I liked it.

@uncalled4: People in love marry and then split
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Unloved: Been there, lol. Sounds like you already made up your mind anyhow.
Unloved · 22-25, F
My parents split. They were supposedly in love before they married.
