It sounds like he is insecure about social settings. Maybe he was the kid that was picked on and the way he adapted to handle that was by becoming a boorish ass. I would talk to him and tell him how much this bothers me and ask him why he feels the need to do that. If he couldn't change his ways then I would have to let him go. Let me see if I can find some documentaries on this subject. ;)

Normal conversation isn't exactly the place for college citations, no. I doubt one would really need to "sense" anything there, the arrogance would be palpable.

That's challenging. Is he like that at home as well?

@HumblleJumblle: I'm not sure how long you've been together, but I personally couldn't live with someone, let alone date someone like that. What drew you to him in the beginning?

@Peaceful: not every conversation is like that. he has lots of redeeming qualities - ive tried to tell him delicately before that people just want to talk to him sometimes not be educated by him. he doesn't get it. and i can see boredom run over people's faces.

@HumblleJumblle: he sounds insecure. If it's a deep seated insecurity, which it sounds like, he may not want to change. It makes him feel knowledgable. Good luck to you.

He's got to realise at some point that he's being a downer. Let him know.
