Does medication cure or only reduce anxiety?

I think i have GAD
NineLives · 41-45, F Best Comment
It really depends on why you have anxiety.
Sometimes it can be caused by imbalances in the brain, in which case medication should help a lot.
Other times, it is more psychological and medication may take the edge off a little, but therapy and mental exercises would be the most helpful here.
Then there is the third option where anxiety is caused by an actual medical disorder. Chronic anemia and other vitamin deficiencies are a few examples of some causes, though there are many. In that situation, you would have to work on fixing the underlying problem.

It could be caused by a medical disorder. Sometimes for no reason i feel dizzy/lightheaded and my nails have a purple hue to them.

@purecrazy93: Well in my opinion that does sound like a medical problem.
If something causes you to not have enough oxygen delivered to your brain and other systems of your body (such as anemia), then that leads to anxiety and panic attacks.
Feeling dizzy and having blue/purple nails are definitely symptoms of low oxygen.

I will talk to doctor about this as soon as possible. Thank you very much for your help!

I was on xanax for a total of a week. Outside of being a zombie i really felt no diffrence. At least untill the hallucinations kicked. I was taken off of it pretty quick. I was taking .5 3x a day. My mom was on xanax when needed and it would stop her anxiety attacks but shed sleep the rest of the day

In most cases a three pronged approach is necessary.

1. Medication.

2. Therapy

3. Lifestyle.

so basically give medication ago, find one that's good for you and at the right levels and you're sweet.

Get some therapy, work on the root causes, learn to Identify dysfunctional thoughts etc because the truth is there's not a single person in the world that couldn't do with abit of therapy once a week

Lifestyle, set some form of routine that helps make you productive within reasonable limits and boundaries. Meaning dont do anything that burns you out but dont stay in bed till 4 each day.

Just doing one one of these on its own rarely achieves very much.

Medication can help the symptoms but not the underlying cause. A lot of times anxiety shows up along with depression.

There's different medications for different kinds of anxiety.

Medication can't cure it...it's a temporary fix.
