Why do people do this?

I've noticed it more that it's men that do it to women. If in the presence of other people they will say belittling things, nasty digs but it's always in front of others.

We volunteer at the same company, i tried we get on when alone it's really upsetting.

Have you ever tried to tell him you do not like the way he belittles you? Or just walk away when he does?
