Do you think it would be okay for me to switch from Christianity to Catholicism for my girlfriend or wife?

Say she's Catholic and I'm Christian, but then I chose to join her church.

Aren鈥檛 Catholics Christians? 馃
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@Billybob2 Different rules? Like sins?
Billybob226-30, M
@SimplyTracie No, like eating fish on Fridays during Lent, being baptized again even if you were baptized at a non Catholic church.
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@Billybob2 Gotcha
ShaythePanTransMan22-25, T
Never understood these things. Don鈥檛 switch. It鈥檚 your damn religion; why would you change something important like that for someone? Makes no sense.
Billybob226-30, M
@ShaythePanTransMan I mean, it's kind of a curiosity thing too I suppose. My mom brought me into the Christian church when I was very young, I never really got to choose for myself.
Beatbox3431-35, M
I don't think it's a big difference. It's again up to you.

Both of them have similar choices. My mom was raised Catholic but she follows the ways of some Protestants. It's Jesus that we care and it won't make a huge difference in the end.
Billybob226-30, M
@Beatbox34 My mom brought me up in a Christian church, I feel going to a Catholic one would also give me the chance to explore for myself.
Beatbox3431-35, M
@Billybob2 Exactly and which is why I feel it doesn't matter at all. If you follow the word of God that is the Bible then that's the only thing that should matter.
Any church worshipping Christ, is a Christian church. Christianity is a fundamental pillar of the Catholic Church.
moonlitMoth42031-35, F
The simplest way out of this mess is to both leave the church and become atheist
Billybob226-30, M
@moonlitMoth420 I believe in God though.
ImKelsey26-30, F
Same religion. No big problem.
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@Billybob2 Ohhh 馃槷
I suppose it doesn鈥檛 matter much as long as you love God.
Billybob226-30, M
@SimplyTracie Like I've said, I was brought into the Christian church at a very young age. I never really got to choose for myself, I think exploring another option might be good.
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@Billybob2 As you implied, it鈥檚 values are likely the same. I think that it鈥檚 more important that you respect each other even if you decide that Catholicism isn鈥檛 your cup of tea.
Lonesurvivor61-69, F
It depends on how devoutly you believe in your protestant dogma. If you simply believe in the Christian God, and are ok with Catholic idiosyncrasies, then I see no reason you won't want to switch. They are the same basic religion, after all. There are a few differences, but not really all that different than the Protestant Episcopal denomination. If, however, you are definitely opposed to Catholic custom (some of which are vastly different from most Protestant denominations), you should probably think twice before giving up your dearly held position. It is a deeply personal choice, and the only one who can know what is right for you, is you.
Billybob226-30, M
@Lonesurvivor I never had a problem with it, my mother does, but not I myself.
Lonesurvivor61-69, F
If you have no problem, if she is your wife, your loyalty should be to her. If only a girlfriend, you owe her no major life changes.
Allelse36-40, M
Become a Muslim and go fight for ISIS, I bet she'll never see that coming.
Billybob226-30, M
@Allelse LOL, no, not at all.
msrosF
@Allelse They cant even differentiate between a White Supremacist shooter and Catholics in Sri Lanka. Poor Muslims.

But Catholics are a part of Christian churches...
Melpomene22-25, F
@Billybob2 Then what's your question about?
Billybob226-30, M
@Melpomene Would it be okay to join a different church?
Melpomene22-25, F
@Billybob2 Religion is a personal choice. If you feel like that's closer to what you believe, where you belong and/or you just want to get married in the same "community", then why not?

Sure if you're happy with that
QuixoticSoul41-45, M
It doesn't seem like the possibility presents any philosophical difficulties to you - and in the end, who but yourself can tell you which religion is right for you, or how much you care about the denomination?

All Catholics are Christians but all Christians are not Catholics. Catholics believe in the Blessed Virgin Mary.

You would not be betraying God, or Jesus, or the holy spirit, if that's what worries you. In fact, I think it is valuable for people to learn about other religions. That doesn't mean you have to sign up. Since you already did, explore away. If you decide to leave in the future, and then want to go back, they have a Mass where all your sins, even severe ones, can be forgiven, around Easter time.

Catholicism IS Christianity....You are Protestant and she is Catholic. All of them are different and not in agreement, yet they say Christianity is the ONE true religion?

Catholics are Christians.

So I am confused here.
Billybob226-30, M
@JoyfulSilence The churches aren't the same, I get the impression that they want to be different from each other.
JoyfulSilence46-50, M
@Billybob2 Catholicism is one branch of Christianity. Catholics are Christians. Other denominations are grouped under the term Protestants. Yet there are Christians in Asia that are separate from both those, like the Coptic Christians in Africa.

Yes, I know there are differences. I was just trying to correct your use of terms, that is all.

You can be married but not compromise your own beliefs. You just respect each other's.
MissTaken36-40, F
Catholicism is simply a version of Christianity- so she鈥檚 as Christian as you are.
