How did watching someone you love being mistreated in an intimate relationship influence the kind of treatment you allow from your significant other?

My dad, at times, was an emotionally abusive asshole to both my mother and myself.

Most of the guys I dated ended up abusive in some way [physical/emotional], including the one I'm divorcing.

As much as I always have said never again since the first but I never see it until well into it.

It's funny (ironic), what influenced what I was willing to accept was watching my parents' [b]good[/b] marriage, so I knew that type of relationship was possible. I've never been willing to settle. So for the time I was married (before I was widowed) I was pretty happy.
