To be honest, yes. Even my mother who's happily married has been hurt numerous times by my step father in the past (not abused. Just heartbroken many times,) because he is a recovering alcoholic. She decided to try to stick by him, and he decided to try to do right by her, and THAT'S what made the difference; not the fact that there was pain in the first place. As of right now, he hardly ever drinks. The end justifies the means.

Look at it this way; say you like to swim, even though you almost drowned once. Having almost drowned probably won't make you not want to swim ever again. You accept it as one bad thing that happened vs. something worth destroying your passion over. There's only ever a problem when the cons outweigh the pros.
