I Love History

Jack Churchill - better known as Mad Jack - was an Englishman who admired Scottish culture. He was an officer in world war two. He never left for battle without his claymore and bagpipes. He's quoted as saying "an officer without his sword is improperly dressed for battle." his sword wasn't for show, though, as he had 45 plus confirmed kills with his.

But it's not his sword I'd like to talk about, but his bagpipes. For Jack Churchill knew how to pick his moments to play the beautiful instrument. He charged a German beach encampment while playing March of the Cameron Men. But it's not that song I'd like to discuss either.

Jack knew that on the battlefield, one would eventually meet their demise. So, when surrounded by German soldiers, and in the moment he thought would be his death, he played "Will Ye No Come Back Again" on his bagpipes. I like to listen to this song and imagine just what was going through his head at this time.

Never fear though, he wasn't killed, just put in a concentration camp which he simply walked out of in Broad daylight. They put him in another one shortly after but he just got bored and left that one too.

I've left out a lot of the story just so I could share that song above. It's well worth a listen and if you haven't already, give the story of Jack Churchill a read. It's rather entertaining.

Didn’t he also have the last confirmed kill with a bow and arrow?

@MrBrownstone that is true. And it was during "Operation Archery" too which is very fitting
